jammed floppy disk drive

This must seem the most silly problem. Can any one please tell me how to get a floppy disk out of its drive. It comes out about 1 cm then wont budge. The temptation is to insert a knife bloade to help but I dont want to damage the drive as it is a laptop. With apologies again for naive question but no one i have asked has offered a solution. I think the metal of the slide has probably been raised up a bit.

When the metal "slider" gets a bit bent you cant get the darn thing out except by using a slim knife to "hold down" the metal piece from the top side of the floppy drive........ however, dont try this unless you are prepared to write off the floppy drive . I've trashed one or two and fixed 10-15 using the knife trick! I push down the slider while pushing the eject button at the same time......good luck.....but DONT call Randy-tx if it trashes the floppy drive http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I had a customer bring a "Broken" floppy recently who's 4 year old decided the floppy drive would make a nice place to "store" his quarters http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ...and a customer who brought a Zip Drive in for repair with a 1.44" floppy disk crammed into it.........couldnt save that one.
I just noticed that you have a laptop.......unless it is cheap and removable [the floppy, that is], take it to a repair shop to be removed.

I think I may not have thanked you for your helpful reply which has confirmed my belief that I shall heve to make the trip to the repair shop. I hate to do this for such an apparently simple problem. It is a salutary lesson that cyberspace depends on very simple mechanical inventions. Many thanks wedge.

I had the same problem--disc stuck in floppy drive in a laptop (HP Omnibook xe4100) and I managed ton get it out using a thin knife blade but now the drive won't accept new discs. I bought the correct external floppy drive with the required cable. I plugged the cable into the Parallel port and booted the machine but windows XP does not detect its presence. I tried de-installing the printer (that previously occupied this port) but this did not help. I then enterred the BIOS screen using F2 during the boot process but did not see anything to change that would help me.
I really do not want to take the machine apart and rip out the old floppy drive and would greatly appreciate it if someone could let me know what I need to do. I am not used to making changes to the BIOS, so please give it to me in byte sized steps, if possible.
