Because of the fact that my alarm clock runs on my computer, I leave it on all night. When I first started using the alarm clock, the hard drive spinning noise would just drive me nuts. I couldn't fall asleep with it on so I created a power scheme in Windows Power Management, which made the hard drive and the monitor shut down after one minute. I'd just set it to that specific power scheme before I went to bed, and it worked great, hard drive would shut down with no problem.
WELL, just this last weekend, I formatted my hard drive and spent nine hours setting everything back up the way I like it. Only problem is, now when I go to Windows Power Management it doesn't offer me the option of shutting down the hard drive. It gives me the option of putting the system on Standby and a time for that, and turning off the monitor and a time for that. Therefore, the last three nights I've been tossing and turning trying to sleep with that stupid ringing/spinning noise in the back ground and again it's driving me nuts!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
I've attempted to use System Standby, because I realize that it encompasses shutting down the hard drive as part of it's job, but because I have to run the alarm program, it won't go into Standby and it gives me an error when it attempts to.
Error:
Your computer cannot go on Standby because a device driver or program won't allow it. Close all programs, and then try again.
I know for a fact that the program that's creating this error is the alarm program because, when I close it the computer goes on Standby with out any problem.
I'm running Windows 98, second edition, and I installed this Windows from the same disk that I installed the previous Windows before it formated the hard drive. I've checked out setting the hard disk to shut down from BIOS, but my BIOS doesn't offer that option.
As you can see I've exhausted all avenues that I'm aware of and am about to pull my hair out. Therefore, any help or advice you could offer would be greatly accepted and appreciated.
Thanks,
