I am building up a system and am unable to get any response from the machine when powering up.

The machine is a AMD K6-2 400. I am using a 200W power supply..Is this big enough?? I have stripped the machine completely back and tried running the board with nothing but memory and graphics and keyboard. The video card is okay, checked on another machine.

I am getting absolutely nothing, no beeps, no bios, nothing. the PSU fan is spinning and the chip fan is running.

Can anyone help please...

Pull everything and try it on a tabletop, with only CPU, RAM, video and keyboard. If it powers up, you have a ground problem, which is what it sounds like. Computer shops have cardboard washers that go between the motherboard and the chassis.

If that's not it, double check the power cables going to the motherboard, make sure the CPU, memory and video card are all properly seated, and watch to see if the fan tries to spin for a second when you power it up.

Hi

I have tried ptiint the board onto the table, out of the machine with just the cpu, ram and video and keyboard but there is nothing...

The fan on the power supply works and the fan on the cpu works but nothing else..

Sorry to piggy back on your question Womble 1, but l have the same problem.

I pulled everything out on to a worktop and powered up.... same result.
Checked cables, changed CPU, memory, changed video card and used different slots. Examined board for cracks ...OK, when a HD is connected it spins but the floopy doesn't even light(even after a change to a known working one).
Downloaded Main board manual and checked jumpers.

The only activity is the CPU - PSU fans and the power LED flashing. ( No beeps even when speakers are connected to the on board sound socket.)

Looks like it's dead or is it just a near death experience?

womble1 You might need a power supply that produces higher wattage, 200W might not be enough. Could also be bad memory, CPU, CMOS chip or motherboard. No beeps is not a good thing...usually means bad motherboard or CMOS chip.

Fra No problem with "piggybacking", we'll just have to watch it and try to address specific repies to you. The answer here is basically the same, except that we don't know what wattage your power supply produces. No beeps usually means bad motherboard or CMOS chip. In your case, try flipping the speaker contacts over, and make sure they are not backwards. Usually they will work either way, but some boards might be picky about it. If you still get no beeps, you might have to have the board checked by a reputable computer shop.

If either of you has motherboards/CPU's still under warranty, I would say contact the vendors and see about tech support or replacements.

Any other ideas?

If this is all new parts be sure to check the voltage selector switch on the power supply, if it is set to 230V some mother boards will react just as you decribe.
