The best/worst job thread got me to thinking.
I would just love to hear from all the veterans here about their most interesting military stories. I'll start by re-producing mine here.
There I was, cruising the Red Sea Onboard U.S.S. Biddle (CG-34), I awoke at the sound of flight quarters when my buddy startled me with a question.
"Didja hear?"
"What?"
"The rudder's gone."
"Oh cram it, I've got to get to the boat deck."
"No really. The rudder yoke is turning, but the ship won't change course."
He was right. After inspection, two divers from the U.S.S. Yellowstone testified that the rudder was indeed gone. To fix it, we would have to drydock. Where was the closest empty drydock facility? Toulon France. Unfortunately, when you're in the Red Sea, France ain't just around the corner. Took us two, no, four weeks to get there, and the 30 foot swells in the Medditerranean didn't exactly help. But once we got there, boy those were the sweetest two weeks I spent in my entire enlistment.

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him to use the net, and he wont bother you for weeks.
