My system config Kobian Intel 810 Motherboard/PIII,500 MHz/64MB RAM/10.2 GB HDD/ Win98 OS

While booting of my system I am getting

CMOS Checksum error Defaults loaded
Please press setup to change clock ratio.

If pressed setup clock it is showing 1st Jan 1999 and clock as 350Mhz.

After changing the CMOS battery it worked well for 20 days without giving any error while booting. But now I am getting again the same error.

What you think might be the problem? Is this error that much serious?
I am able to work after changing the clock to 500 MHz and date .

Bad CMOS battery, needs to be replaced.

Can't be the just the battery, Pete. The mainboard is not old and this is the second battery! Replacing it every 20 days is a pain.
I see 3 possibles.

1)The cmos chip (or equivalent) is faulty, drawing too much current.
2)The battery contacts are dodgy.
3)Something is shorting the battery or related circuitry, intermittently.

srinivas123: Did the system keep time properly during the 20 days it was working? If not, I suggest that case 2 above applies.

Batteries can be bad off the shelf, stranger things have been known to happen.

The other possibilities you posted are valid as well, could be any of them. I'd say if it's not the battery I would suspect a bad CMOS chip.

No the system didn't keep the date properly when the system worked fine for 20 days. But the error didn't displayed when battery is changed.
Now only I am getting this error. If I change system clock from default 350 to 500MHz and save the settings in BIOS it will boot normally without errors.
What is the remedy? Shall I ask the service person to change the motherboard ? Do you think this error is serious if motherboard is not changed immediately. But how it is working fine if I change the clock to 500 MHz? At bootup it is showing PIII,500MHz but in BIOS it is showing 350MHz.How is it like that?

I had a problem with a system losing time (losing hours overnight) which was fixed just by removing the battery and putting it back in again. You could try that. Try cleaning it and the contacts while you're there. Use WD40 or ethanol. Make sure the contacts are pressing firmly against the battery.

If that doesn't work try a new battery.

If that doesn't work the CMOS chip is probably faulty.

Regarding the CPU speed, don't worry, 350 will be the BIOS default setting for that processor.
