View Full Version : Meaning Behind Your Handle - Just For Grins & Giggles

Hey Gang,

Most of you know that my handle is coined after my 1966 Cadillac sitting out in the garage. She's big and she's blue. Don't get me started. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Just for fun, let's all give a little history behind our chosen handle on this forum. Why did you choose it? Does it mean something to you personally? Did you just pull it out of thin air? Get my drift?

I have heard Pete's explanation about a year ago, but would like to hear it again. I won't even attempt to mention names of people I would like to hear from. It was easy a year ago, because we only had a few regulars. That's not so anymore and there are more and more people jumping into the fray and sticking around.

So let's have some fun. eh?

Cheers,

Big Blue 66

I was a big basketball fan back in Jr.high school. All the guys/jocks on the team had nicknames from the NBA players of the day.( Mostly Boston Celtics ...Sam and KC Jones, Bill Russell, Satch Sanders, John Havlicek, Blah,Blah,Blah.) They had a player named Bailey Howell who's nickname was "Buckshot". The Buck part of it is what everyone still calls me ( aside from a few other things) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif That was 30 or more years ago ...52 is the year my folks were bless with me.

I spend a lot of my professional time reminding people of the difference between accuracy and precision, especially in regard to negative-vs.-positive formulation of null hypotheses (naw, you don't want that much detail...). "not_fred" comes from "!Fred" - the negation of Fred. Perfectly accurate, but not very precise: my name isn't Fred. Somehow, I came up with it on a bicycle trip - somewhere in Spain, I believe. My memory on the exact detail is neither precise nor accurate.

I know, I'm not well. But I'm getting better.

Hmm... I'd been assuming *vax was a reference to DEC computers.

My handle is a contraction of my first and last names. I'm primarily of North European descent, but I like the African sound of it. (I have the same handle at Anandtech, where my icon is a gorilla.)

Hmmm...interesting topic, and some interesting replies.

I got into a bit of study of the ancient Native American cultures about the same time I got into computers. The Paleolithic cultures that roamed North America 10,000-15,000 years ago and possibly longer were the ones that fascinated me the most. I figure anyone that can not only survive but proliferate in this climate as well as supposedly crossing the Bering Strait with nothing more for tools than rocks, bones and tree limbs deserves abundant respect.

Keep in mind that the climate was a bit warmer 20,000 years ago, but very little, and the Bering Strait was downright hostile...Many archaeologists currently believe groups of European or Mongolian descent crossed the Bering Strait around that time, it was not submerged from 40,000-10,000 years ago.

A friend who had a degree in Archaeology and a mutual friend nicknamed each other Arrowhead Fred and Clovis Clyde, (Clovis being one of the earliest known cultures in North America), and I subsequently acquired the moniker Paleo Pete.

When I needed an Internet identity it was perfect, at that time there was no other Paleo Pete on the net that I am aware of, and it also serves to pay tribute to a people who accomplished feats very few modern individuals could even comprehend. (If you don't believe that try making a spear with a tip made of rock, find a couple of hides and camp out in the wilderness for a week...in February...)

I firmly believe in fact, we all owe our very existence to just such a culture. Somewhere down the line each of us has ancestors from some part of the world who survived and proliferated just as the North American Paleolithic cultures did.

And that's the signifigance of the nick Paleo Pete. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

well this is a topic that I had been thinking of starting myself, it has been interesting and very inlightning. LuciasClay is from a song by the Charlie Daniels Band. "Lucias Clay was a greedy old man and that was all there was to it" About a man that buried all his money in his yard and some kids that killed him for it but when they tried to dig it up they discovered his yard was a swamp filled with quick sand. Poetic justice?

Hey Lucias, wasn't that the song about scary things in the swamp?

Something about some things that'll frighten the strongest man?!?

Seems i remember a song about like that around the mid-70's, called the " Wooley Swamp " maybe?

"Legend of Wooley Swamp"

Well, if you ever go back into Wooley Swamp, well, you better not go at night. There's things out there in the middle of them woods that make a strong man die from fright. Things that crawl and things that fly and things that creep around on the ground. And they say the ghost of Lucius Clay gets up and he walks around. But I couldn't believe it. I just had to find out for myself. And I couldn't conceive it 'cause I never would have listened to nobody else. And I couldn't believe it. I just had to find out for myself there's somethings in this world you just can't explain.

Spoken:
The old man lived in the Wooley Swamp way back in Booger Woods. He never did do a lot of harm in the world, but he never did do no good. People didn't think too much of him. They all thought he acted funny. The old man didn't car about people anyway. All he cared about was his money. He'd stuff it all down in mason jars and he'd bury it all around. And on certain nights if the moon was right he'd dig it up out of the ground. He'd pour it all out on the floor of his shack and run his fingers through it. Yeah, Lucius Clay was a greedy old man and that's all that there was to it.

Cable boys was white trash. They lived over on Carver's Creek. They were mean as a snake and sneaky as a cat and belligerent when they'd speak. One night the oldest brother said, "Y'all meet me at the Wooley Swamp later. We'll take old Lucius's money and we'll feed him to the alligators." They found the old man out in the back with a shovel in his hand, thirteen rusty mason jars was just dug up out of the sand. And they all went crazy and the beat the old man, and the picked him up off of the ground. Thre him in the swamp and stood there and laughed as the black water sucked him down. Then they turned around and went back to the shack and picked up the money and ran. They hadn't gone nowhere when they realized they were running in quicksand. And they struggled and they screamed but they couldn't get away and just before they went under they could hear that old man laughing in a voice as loud as thunder.

And that's been fifty years ago and you can go by there yet. There's a spot in the yard in the back of that shack where the ground is always wet. And on summer nights, if the moon is right down by the that dark footpath, you can hear three young meen screaming. You can hear one old man laugh.

Gallaeglagh
01-01-2002, 05:33 AM
While I have a couple other handles that I use Gallaeglagh is my current favorite. I had to to a bit a research to come up with it. I needed or at least wanted a warrior name (due to the the fact that I like to play war games) that was from before 1900 and also Western European. When I came across Gallaeglagh I immediatley wanted it. The Gallaeglagh were a group of warriors who lived on the coasts of Ireland and Scotland who were mixed ethnically with Vikings. They were known as fierce warriors who would always fight to death, the Irish and Scots fought them for a long time 'til they realized it was hopeless and incorporated them into their society. Henceforth I am Gallaeglagh!

Ok you asked.....

My nic is inspired by the Japanese anime film "Ghost in the Shell".
If you haven't seen it, it's about a cyborg cop who is pondering what makes her human and not just a robot. (In the film there are 3 types of huminoid life. Men,Cyborgs and Robots) Her answer to what makes her human is her soul or her "ghost". Anyway,in her world it is possible to hack into a person's mind and change their memories just as we now hack into computers and change log files or whatever. Hence the name "Ghost_Hacker".

Good topic bigblue.
Well my name originated from a psychiatric term called diurnal mood of variation. Some people get me messed up with being a female, I guess they think diurnal means diana or something. But my real name is mitch. And guess what i m male. Also my middle name is sean so me and sea69 have something in common. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
But i pick the term because i have a form of depression, and its classified as being diurnal.
Diurnal is like being more depressed in the morning than in the evening. So that sums me up pretty much, and yes i gotten better than i used too. SO if you see me mad in a post, you know why http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif JK
Also i picked it because no one else could possible have a name like diurnal, at least i dont know or seen the term.

kayden azagthoth
01-01-2002, 10:16 PM
I came up with my name in the summer of 2000. I was tired of seeing so many boring nick names out there, so I thought I would do something a bit more creative.

Kayden- I think of this as a male name, although I've heard many tell me it's a female name. I had a dream that summer and in that dream I saw the name Kayden. That stuck with me and so I thought it was worth keeping.

Azagthoth- Azag in Sumerian means, "enchanter or magician". Thoth in Copic is the name of the Egyptian god of magic and wisdom. Azagthoth is also the Lord of Chaos from the Necronomicon, or The Book of the Dead. Azagthoth is also the last name (supposedly) of the guitarist from the band Morbid Angel. They're not one of my all time favorite bands, but they're okay.

I just wanted to be unique. Plus I was tired of typing in screen names in places and getting the message, "This name is already taken."

Integral, as in the mathematical operation. The refects my education and significant intrest, also it is relativly unique so I can be pretty sure of not haveing to compete for it.

The final touch will be to add "That about sums it up" to my sig, since integration is the proces of summing infintesimals.

Sorry to come back to this but it seems some of my American friends are mystified: Ok, you all know what a Piano is - but Anorak seems to have stumped some of you. Well, essentially there are just two types of anorak here in the UK: train anoraks and computer anoraks, and an "anorak" is almost synonymous with "geek". Pi-anorak. Maybe "anorak" became slang for "geek" because train watchers wear anoraks to keep them warm and protect them from the rain so common in England?

Nga
01-03-2002, 01:25 AM
My name is actually Nga (funny that) but my handle is Ngaztee [pronounced NAsty-but I make it clear now...I'm not] Nga is actually a tribal name, and I'm indigenous to the country I live in...New Zealand, I'm half Maori and half Cook Island...an interesting combination, home of the All Blacks, but wont mean a lot to those who have not heard of Rugby, our national sport.

Ngaztee arose from an old friend, who had a lisp, and since my name was Nga [pronounced Naaahr], when he said my name, it sounded like NASTY, and there you go.

When I took on Ten Pin Bowling professionally, my nick was also Ngaztee. I've had this handle for well over 17 years now...

Initially I had a lot of trouble entering Chat Rooms years ago, cause Hosts there thought my name was pronounced as NAZI, and ordered me to change it..but through time, and looking back now...they even laugh about it.

Whew....well, because you asked...

When Solomon was given the chance to have his heart's desire granted...he chose wisdom.

At some point in time I came to the realization that what is often called "the pursuit of wisdom," is just that, a pursuit! (ARGH, and I thought I knew it all!) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

I was looking for a moniker that represented my journey to be a wise man, rather than my arrival. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I loved it when my children were at that age when they questioned everything in their eagerness to learn! Their most oft used question was "why"? Thus, my first attempt was Whysman which was taken. So, I went with the phonetics and I'm now Whyzman, the seeker of wisdom!

My desire is to begin each new day's quest acknowledging there's a lot I don't know, or perhaps need to relearn. So, I'm reminded whenever I'm on line that I don't know it all (my wife already knows this)! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Never be afraid to ask why (chutzpah)! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif And, my life's goal is to be able to display and incorporate the characteristics of a Man of Wisdom (especially to my children)! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

PS: I also found it helpful (really a necessity) to invest in kneepads! Asking my wife and children's forgiveness during the learning curve has wrecked quite a few pair of Dockers! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hey,

This is a wee bit off the topic, but Whyzman was talking about wisdom and kids. The following will be appreciated by those of us who have raised our kids, and yet to be enjoyed by those just starting out.

Ever notice how when a child is growing up, possibly all the way to between 10-12 years of age, Dad is all-knowing and wise? Then, when the child reaches his/her mid-teens, the child knows everything and Dad knows very little, if anything. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Then, when the child is even older and goes out into the real world, hmmm, Dad wasn't so damn dumb after all! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Cheers,

Scroatbagg, well two reasons
1. A scroat bagg is a large bag used for putting windsurfing sails in when wet.
2. Had to do with the snip!! Was at home with my old Atari and just got a game, F16 fighter, needed a good handle. So as my B**ls where aching I thought "Scroat". In the early days of the net i never had problems registering as Scroat, in recent years someone else has used Scroat so I added the Bagg bit!!.

I thought it was so funny, I decided to use it, plus being in the USMC, I thought it was kinda appropriate...I use it almost everywhere...so if you ever see somebody with the handle it's probably me. Although my dad uses my yahoo account to play pinochle...

scroatbagg

Scroatbagg, well two reasons
1. A "scroat bagg" is a large bag used for putting windsurfing sails in when wet.

Love the thread!!

Hey Big Blue I had a '67 Cadillac Sedan Devile back in the early '80s I thought it had to be the only one like it around, untill I got back in it one day at the supermarket and my key wouldn't fit http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
Then I realized mine was two spaces over. It was even faded in the same places as mine. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif But it was a great car http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey! i like that! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Actually as a system admin i do work with IIS; so i guess it would be appropiate ( even if iis-really is just a simple i-is ).

I have to say tho that if you haven't already guessed, Bob isn't my real name, but it serves quite well on the net. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I am not going to tell you how very many MONTHS of referring to you as "i i s bob" went by before I finally realized it is "i is bob". But, in my defense, my husband never asked me about "i i s bob" either. Duh.

Well, I was the only person at my high school in Dumpwater, Idaho to pass the SATs I got an 840. The name Kid Genius just kind of stuck. I got accepted to Dumpwater community college but decided to pursue a career as a fast food manager.

Well Bosseanna

In ireland and particularly in limerick "Boss" is slang when greeting someone. "Well Boss" would be equivilant to "hows it goin". Since i knew most people wouldnt know this and i didnt want to push my luck i changed it to Bossa. Also, in the irish language, adding "eanna" to the end of a word is the most common way of pluralising a noun, hence Bosseanna.

I also use the handle staticdischargeman, its a bit of a mouthfull, but its a superhero from the cartoon "The tick" he wears a carpet suit and rubs his feet on the ground and then shocks people with static electricity. Generally he just gets really hot in the suit and winds up sitting down for the whole battle.

Id just like to point out that i have just wasted the last two minutes of youre life and you're never getting them back http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
