Kay. Don’t know why I didn’t start a thread on “Enterprise” sooner. I know there are a few fans here and I would like to hear their thoughts on the show too.
Ok, I knew that the first season would be weak as the writers tried to find the heart of the new crew. (only the classic Star trek and Deep Space Nine had what I think were strong first seasons.) Still I think they did a good job. I like the return to a smaller more “ethnic” crew and the fact that these guys are so backwards compared to say Voyager or next Generation. These folks haven’t a clue how best to use the transporter and they actually use grapping hooks instead of a tractor beam. This crew isn't going to be saving the world anytime soon, so we should get a chance to see them make all the mistakes and go thru the growing pains that later generations will learn from.
I hope to see more of the Andorians, Orionians (??) and other Federation races that where in the Classic Star Trek but got dumped from the later series. It would also be nice to see the beginning of the conflicts that will lead to the formation of the Federation and for Star Fleet to show why it, a human institution, one day becomes the Federation’s military and scientific arm.
As for the crew, I like them.
Travis and Phlox still need to be fleshed out a little more I think. After all they seem to be the only ones beside T’pol who have any deep space experience. Yet they do very little outside their assigned roles.
For a long time I thought T’pol was T’pau the old Vulcan woman in “Amok time” (the show where Spock and Kirk fight over Spock’s bride) Since Vulcan’s live such a long time it would have been interesting if they where the same woman. I think the writers missed a chance there. Some other fans where not to pleased with the “skin” shown by T’pol in the first episode saying that it wasn’t what Star trek was about. Baloney!!! Star Trek has always been about the babes. From Rand /Uhura to Dax/Deanna/ Seven of Nine and countless other “babes of the week” Star Trek’s eye candy is half of what the show is about.
I do think the writers got Archer right. He started out a little too trusting and naïve about what “first contact” was all about. But over the last few episodes he’s beefed up the Enterprise’s weapons because he got tried of being "outclassed" and mention how he should be reminded, “not to stop and help everyone.” He’s good without being too good. He can deal with the Andorians but would never be able to stand up to the Borg for instance. (After all he can’t be a great captain ala Kirk or Picard simply because he’s never been mentioned in the time line before.)
Tucker, Malcom and Hoshi are OK so far. But I think the writers still need to work on Tucker. He's a little too much like Doctor McCoy without the humor.
All in all this crew/show could develop into one of the better ones.
Hi GH,
Star trek to me is Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scottie.
When the series came on over it was the only school day I was allowed to stay up late.
Yes alright the acting and the props where a bit cheesey, But it was along time ago.
The trouble now is they start a new series, and half way through they stop it for something else.
Live long and prosper
kfh.
PS Great post.

Hey GH have to agree with you. i kinda like the new series; however i really detested voyager-just didn't catch me for some reason. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
Tho i did like looking at Seven! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
I really thought DS9 had a great plot and crew-but unfortunately it didn't have enough " flitting " around for some fans, so they never really gave it a chance.
I've always been a trekkie ( anyone in the PC industry who isn't is suspect! ); listening to Scotty perform miricales ever week made me want to be an engineer also-but, PC's turned out to be my forte.
I hope the next movie is a good one, though i like the next gen, i think they've about played then out.
I'd like to see a series based on a young Kirk at starfleet acadamy, that follows the books and fleshes out the original characters as they wer when young and brash, fresh ensigns in StarFleet.
I really look forward to the day ( i hope i'm still alive & healthy ) when Holography becomes a viable gaming reality!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well, folks believe it or not we have actually made past the beginning of Star Trek....the foundations of Starfleet were laid out after the governments of Earth recovered from the wars started by Kahn Singh (and his genetically enhanced cronies) in the late 1990's..so really that is NOW!
So I expect a little rewriting of future history (I hate temporal mechanics....) as the new series develops.
Also I agree with GH, it is about the "Babes"...not only the regulars but hey, Kirk had one in every port (or found one...). As Gene Roddenbury himself once described it...."Wagontrain to the stars".
iisbob, and yes anyone who considers themselves "into" computers and is not a fan of Star Trek should be looked upon with as much suspicion as Ferengi at Ft. Knox

I like the older ones.. the 1st, and next generation.. some of Voyager is pretty good.. but with the new one, I can't get past the "Star" Captain.. I never liked him in the time travel show and I don't like him now,
kinda prejudices me towards what may be a great show.
of course in 10 years I may learn to like it.

Well, Ghost, you're a lot nicer than me. I have been frustrated with the whole concept of going back in time, and find myself muttering toward the tv things like "What do you mean you went into space without SHIELDS?? You have no shields???" and "You never got your cannons working?? Been in space for weeks!" and "Hey! Prime Directive applies here!!" Plus, I know this is petty of me, but I don't want them to "sing" the theme song.. never been sung before. But it is the only Trek series right now, and we'll watch it..so far, my favorite character is the beagle because I have no expectations for him.
I learned to like Voyager even though the ship itself always looked "squat" to me. (My husband and I did speculate on how tiring it must have gotten to sew Seven into that "outfit" every show with the modernized Wonder Women cones.) And we liked Deep Space Nine well enough, and I have found myself missing Quark...at least Ferengi are honest about their treachery. So figure we'll learn to like Enterprise someday.

I can only assume that you are all talking about the newest version of Start Trek. Think of poor me over hear in Scotland. We do not get it yet (unless you have cable and I cannot get that where I stay). At present BBC2 is giving re-run of Next Generation. Voyager is almost finished and DS9 is long gone. The only time I watch TV is when some form of ST is on. When the original came out over here I was the head barman in a small pub. On a Monday night at 7.10 I used to stop serving the customers until ST finished. The regulars used to know not to disturb me. Any strangers that came in were ignored. Best program ever made. SO for Xmas you can video all the episodes of the new one and send them to me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Kay I too didn't like the opening song when I first heard it. There I was, a/v system all warmed up and what comes blasting out of my speakers, but some reject '80's tune. But I have gotten use to it and no longer have to get snacks when it starts to play. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I have heard that many fans (casual and avid) didn't care much for Voyager. I liked the show except for one thing Federation Technobabble. Which began with Next Generation and reached an all time high with Voyager. Is it really necessary to explain everything you do,every botton you push? As McCoy would say "less talk, more action Spock!! This is one reason I like Enterprise so far, no Technobabble.
What do you mean you went into space without SHIELDS?? You have no shields???"
I think this has to do with why the Vulcans didn't want Archer going into deep space. Star Fleet just isn't ready yet and has no idea just how nasty space can be.(which should make for some great episodes.) Plus there is no Prime directive to keep them "out of trouble". (again should make for some interesting situations) The show should really start to get "good" around the middle 2nd to 3rd season.(I hope) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

ErnieK: You have my sympathy. Ghost did a wonderful, funny "NO TREK??" post months and months ago..but hey, at least you do have Next Generation (which I personally think is better than Enterprise). Reminds me of when Next Generation came out. I had cable, but they didn't have the UHF channel the show was coming on. I had to go down to electronics store and get several gizmos to get the ability for my "cable ready" tv to access the UHF loop so I could watch the show.
Ghost: I hope you're right, because have seen better shows start and run for awhile, then get cancelled. Can't remember the name..think Space Rangers?..of a show that had lousy lines, but good action and plots. They were just getting "better" with character interaction and dialogue when they got cancelled. Always seemed sad to me that one can find bunches of cop shows, lawyer shows..and this season government agency shows..but rare to find a "space" show. When things get dismal here on Earth, I find it most comforting to go into space in my imagination..read nothing but sci fi until feel better. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Kay Do you mean "Space Above and beyond" ? Which got canceled after one season.
Edit After reading some other fan reactions to some of the Star Trek shows. I seem to be one of the few fans that likes all the shows (not very episode is good, but thats true anywhere). Perhaps it's because I still remember the dark times (1970-1977) before there where any new movies or shows and I'm just glad Trek shows/movies are still being made.
Or mabey it's just because we junkies care not about the quality of our fix just how often we get one. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hmmm....I know that each series has its good shows....and its bad; and that they all get off to a kind of rocky start...but I kind of had my sights set on a Capt. Sulu series (I would have liked it but I think George is getting a little too old now to make it a viable option), and I'm not to displeased with Enterprise just can't wait to see how things shape up next season...

Cool! I never had the nerve to put the bumper sticker on my car which reads: "Beam me up, Scottie. There's NO intelligent life down here." but often agree totally with the sentiment!
No, was something like Space Rangers or Troopers or something..pretty sure about the space part. Didn't last more than about six episodes. The special effects were good from the beginning, but actors were "stiff" and lines started out sort of cheesy. But they were getting MUCH better by the third or fourth show. Was one of the few sci fi shows that was being aired on a major network..think CBS in this case.

Hmmmmm...Missed that one, but then I don't watch much ABC,CBS or NBC stuff anyway. The only other shows I'm watching besides Enterprise is Farscape and Stargate SG1 (The Showtime version)

you guys are lucky. back here in the phils, were still watching voyager! enterprise hasnt come out yet.
i used to think TNG was the best but i have a preference for voyager because its more "intimate" as compared to the others in the alpha quadrant. voyager gives me that feeling where the crew can just be dissected into their smallest parts since they are (1) alone with no fedderation ships and (2) encountering extramental anomalies and local conflicts.
i found DS9 not that good. i stil lwatch the reruns but i never liked sisquo. best star trek characters ever: the cowboy kirk, spock, sulu, data, piccard, janeway, the doctor, tuvok, harry kim.

Let me join.
I couldnt get into any of the star treks after the original. Im just hook on spock, kirk, and the rest of the originals.
Actually i just cant watch for some reason, i guess to me its just the same ole story line one after another.
I think After the Wrath of Kahn , it went southward. IMHO Kahn was the best villian besides Zaud from Superman.

What can I say about Trek that hasn't already been said...
I dig the 1st series with thier wierd lighting, skimpy costumes and groovy sets, the moral lesson and the final yuk yuk between Kirk/Spock/McCoy are all ST staples for me.
I tolerated Next Gen only because I'm a fan of Trek. Now, these years later, I watch NG with more interest than I ever did when it was a regular series (thanx TNN) although I noticed the Next Gen crew violates the prime directive every chance they get.
DS9 never caught my attention and even my fanship of Trek wasn't strong enough to make me watch beyond episode 3.
Voyager is over now isn't it?
Enterprise, I've only seen the first 3 eps. The jury is still out.
One thing I do know, as long as there is television there will always be a Star Trek series on.
