I seem to get spontaneous reboot probs with no real pattern.
It's usually when I'm online but happens offline.

Can you give us any more information? Your system, what you usually do with it, if there's any pattern to the reboots? This sort of thing can be caused by hundreds of problems and that's not much to go on. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have a custom built PC with Windows 98vers 2 a 450mhz PentiumIII processor with 128mgs of ram 10 gig hard drive and 1 yr old

Hi, I'm having the same exact problem with an HP Pavillion XE736
which I bought three weeks ago. The darn thing won't even start up
anymore. The HP logo just shows up and then it starts rebooting
all over again. The funny thing is the keyboard stays on when I
turn the power off for all the computer. Help me! Please!

First guess is heat or power supply problems.
Open the case, clean out all the dust and debris with a can of compressed air, especially on the heatsink fins and power supply air slots.
More info means does this happen when a certain program is running? Have you installed any new hardware or software? Have you watched the clock to see if it happens after a certain time? etc.
[b]hello:/b] If it's less than a month old, take it back, it's under warranty. Don't touch it, and don't let anyone else touch it who is not a factory certified HP technician, (Not even us), you'll void the warranty. Take it back a dozen times if necessary, they'll fix it or get tired of seeing you and replace it.

I've seen this problem on Compaqs. This isn't a 100% fix but it may work cause it's worked for me before.
Boot into "Safe Mode" go into Device manager, click on the plus sign of CD-Rom. Is there two instances of it but there's only 1 CD-Rom installed? Remove both of them and reboot windows will install the correct one again.
Another fix is to boot to a safe mode Dos prompt, remove the attributes from system.dat and user.dat, then export to a file, and re-import with the regedit /c switch.
JohnC, I have had that happen because of memory problems. In a new installation, it was because the memory wouldn't handle the bus speed. In an older system, I had to reseat the memory or remove it and clean the contacts. If your memory is composed of two 64M sticks, you could try removing one at a time to isolate a suspect stick.
"Hello" should definitely take it back under warranty.
