nice one buck-

too bad the real 'effect' of it is somewhat lost in a screenshot.. the vividness??

it looks much better "in person"!

and as hired points out (indirectly) I used to have mine just a blank color all the time in win98se to save on system resources and now find in winXP I don't need to worry about those type things. Of course I'm not a game guy...

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

oh- and i really don't like the classic look- in fact I booted back to win98 and after a while I actually noticed eye strain??

Add me to the list of basic desktop settings. Once in a while I might add something I find on that space pic site that has those daily updates from the Hubble but even then they don't last more than a couple of days before I toss it away.

Just the My Computer/Recycle Bin icons are featured on the desktop and the task bar sits vertically on the right hand side of the screen. Zone Alarm sits in the system tray and bob's your uncle.

Not too mention that XP natively supports my www/email/search buttons on my cordless logitech keyboard.

I picked up the Logitech Pro 300 for the wife

I think the reason I can’t get anything but Junk on the XP crash is the frame rate of the camera
I set it to record as a video after the first attempt to grab a snap shot /Photo failed .

BSOD Desktop (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bathenkel/images/bsod_desktop.jpg)

No problem, Hiredgoonz. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

NamelessHero, a suggestion: Eliminating all that stuff from the taskbar and the system tray and changing your interface to XP Classic will improve your performance. I only have the Internet Explorer, mail, and show desktop icons in the taskbar and the volume control in the system tray.

Here's my method:

Create a folder in My Documents called "My Stuff" and move all your most-used files and icons there. For stuff like Word and the CD Burner, I just make a copy of them from the Programs menu and put them there as well.

Then, I right-click the taskbar, go to Toolbars and select New Toolbar and point it at the My Stuff folder. This creates a menu in the taskbar. Click the double arrows or hold down the TAB key to open it.

Switch to XP Classic and do a registry hack to increase menu speed: START, RUN, type regedit and hit OK --> HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Control Panel --> click Desktop --> in the right frame double-click MenuShowDelay and decrease the value from 400 to 100.

I'm into speed! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

one additional comment that I should have made to begin with;

when posting a large image give a link to it rather than inserting it, this is in consideration for dial up users who then may choose to click on the link or not.

hehe- onlt 62 posts TOO LATE!!

If I ever forget to appreciate my cable connection, all I have to do is remember using the in-laws' computer in Rockingham, North Carolina...dial-up no faster than 24600...really makes my system seem faster when I get home...

Heh, my menushowdelay is at 50! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif now that's speedy!!

And i have no performance hit running Xp in " XP " mode, of course i keep the system files in RAM, and i run a G3 Ti200 OC'd to a 500 so the graphic's hit is negligible.

XP really loves a GB or more of speedy DDR ram. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

That's fast enough.

The delay is the amount of time from when you click the mouse buttons to open a menu and when that menu actually opens. Mines at 25 ms. 0 is fast, but 25 ms is better because the menu is not so fast as to accidentally open a menu you don't need.

Sea,
This is it.
MENUSHOWDELAY [+]

This Registry hack works with ALL Win32 releases: NT4, 95, 98, ME, 2000 and
XP.
Run Regedit and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Create a new String Value: right-click in the right hand pane -> select New ->
String Value -> name it "MenuShowDelay" (without quotes) -> double-click on it
-> give it a value from 0 (fastest = no delay) to 65534 (slowest = maximum
delay). Default is 250 for 95/98/ME and 400 for NT4/2000/XP.
These values are the waiting time (in milliseconds) all pop-up/drop-down
menus/dialogs/lists are delayed by before appearing on the screen.
For fastest GUI response, double-click on "MenuShowDelay", enter 0 and then
restart Windows to see all pop-up menus open instantaneously.
UNDOCUMENTED:
To completely disable the automatic menu pop-up, enter -1 and then restart
Windows. Now you will have to click one more time on each item/folder (after
selecting it) to make its menu expand (manual pop-up/drop-down). This forces
Windows (I have tested this only with 95, 98 and ME) to "behave" similar to
the older Windows/WfWG 3.xx releases. Have fun.

FYI: This can also be achieved by using TweakUI, the famous MS Power Toy [110
KB, free, not supported]: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/guide/tweakui.exe
from the General tab -> check the "Menu Animation" box.
