AVG is free, but not as robust. If you can't afford Norton's, it's a pretty good anti-virus.

Here's the one's you don't know:

Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/Download.html) - Free utility that lets you see the hardware and software installed on your system.

CSE HTML Validator Lite (http://www.htmlvalidator.com/lite) - If you design webpages, you're bound to make mistakes. This just error checks the code. It's invaluable to me. The Pro version costs, but the Lite version is free.

iZotope Vinyl (http://www.izotope.com/products/vinyl/vinyldx.html) - Winamp plugin that simulates vinyl records - skips, scratches, dust and all. Try the popular "played a hundred times too many" preset. Note: For some reason, I can't get it to install correctly on my XP box anymore. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Tweak UI (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui) - Great utility! It's available at a lot of sites, but this one's my favorite. It's basically a registry hacker that does the hacking safely.

Unplug 'n' Pray (http://grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm) - Steve Gibson wrote this program that disables Universal Plug n' Play in Windows.

Yankee Clipper 3 (http://www.yankee-clipper.net) - Clipboard expander that stores multiple items.

now for a question;

why can't I install xppowertoys??

I have even downlaoded it 2x to be sure it wasn't corrupt.

keeps getting to the part where it's at "system", then hangs and says something about 'error1920.Service Interactive Logon failed to start I may not have suffiecient priveleges to install??

I am admin, and even running in the master admin account- "run as"- it says the same thing.

have checked everything I could find in group policies.....

anyone with some thoughts??

I dunno, Sea69. Try the custom installation and check off everything but TweakUI. There's other versions, but I like the cleaner interface of this version. Plus the others are a pain to install.

Thanks to all of you who mentioned AVG. I have been running Norton antivirus and keeping it up to date. All the good words on AVG convinced me to try it. In all farness I had to give AVG a try.

Well Mr Norton and I must be doing something correctly.
No Virus found

AVG took 15 minutes to scan all four of my drives.
And showed a total of 35000 files scanned.
Using the installed default settings.

Using Nortons Nav 2002
took 12 minutes to do a complete scan ( My default settings)
92992 files scanned.

I didn’t notice any system performance change with Both installed and running at the same time in their default auto protect modes.

Before I drop AVG on one of my other systems.
Can anyone tell me How it handles News group Downloads?

The PCGuide (http://www.pcguide.com/care/data/virus/scan.htm) actually recommends using more than one antivirus; cost permitting.

I have had NAV "miss" a virus that it had already immediately quarantined and had then been deleted by me. AVG found it; it was in a restore file used by WinME. Was this a false positive??

I expect that any difference in the number of files scanned using different scanners depends on what file-extensions have been selected to be scanned. AVG does not scan all files by default. This can be changed by checking "Test all extensions" in the "Complete Test Settings" sub-menu of the "Service" FileMenu. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I came across a little free program a couple of years back. It’s called BackDoorMan. Its actually a simple browser that is coded to let you jump to the next number in an url. So if you’re browsing and you come across a pic that’s say /sunset001.jpg you can click a button and it’ll jump to /sunset002.jpg etc. You can also set it to go to the next number automatically after a set number of seconds, say every 5 seconds if you’re on a cable or dsl modem or if you’re browsing a local drive. It works on directories too. Say you have /album17 then you can go to /album18 with a click. (think of the possibilities)

Also has a couple of other cool features.

It’s pretty handy cause a lot of sites store their pics and indexes numerically. I’m pretty sure the web page where I got it isn’t up anymore and a recent google search didn’t find the program.

I have it in a zip if anyone’s interested. I’d post it but I have no idea how to do that. I could perhaps send it to someone else to post. It’s just over 2 megs.

Just wanted to thank everyone for mentioning "Ad Aware. (http://www.majorgeek.com/index2.html)" I downloaded and ran it once several months (years?) ago, and then forgot about it. Yesterday I downloaded the newest version (release 5.71), and it found three Trojan spyware programs and of course several DoubleClick, etc., cookies (even though I have the DoubleClick "Opt_Out (http://www.doubleclick.com/us/corporate/privacy/privacy/ad-cookie/) cookie installed). Looks like I'd better get used to running AdAware routinely!

I haven't read this thread for quite some time now and just saw your effort to reach me. Sorry I didn't see it earlier. I tried to send you an e-mail but got the same results you got, but with a bonus. The return to sender notice was carrying a .dat file (ATT00006.dat) as an attachment so it was disposed of immediately and I went and downloaded a second virus protection (AVG). But after the updates and installation I was having a hard time to connect (dial-up) and would get booted off too plus slow connections. I disabled AVG and everything is working better for the moment. Full scan by AVG came back no runs, no hits and no errors and I'll try to get Jackie Gleason's buddy to do the same later.

So for now we ought to just meet here at the After Hours Club. You got your choice of Radar's Grape Nehi's or a little from Hawkeye's still, I'll buy.

The pings and unsolicited port attempts have been frequent lately too.

One that is a great program but isn't mentioned here is Trillian. Its a do it all chat program, handles AOHellIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN and IRC. It doesn't support all features but enough to be useful, the big non-support being ICQ chats although they are beta testing a new version so I would assume it'll be in there. The install is a bit flaky as I had to tell it to use my old contact list from ICQ twice but I worked around it and its workin good.

Forgive my ignorance, but when using tracking software such eMailTracker Pro, what do u do with the IP number which is said to finally identify the source of the offending sender.

Can u somehow return e-mails to an IP address?
