We have a system (K6-3,400mhz w/128MB RAM, ASUS P5SVM motherboard)and it was running just fine for about 3 months and all of a sudden it started letting out a high pitched sound and it seems to be coming from the motherboard. How can I determine what is wrong? The user works for most or close to most of the day and it will start...seems like something might be getting hot, but not sure what? It does not happen frequently. Maybe 3-4 times over the past month or month in a half.

Hi rberry,

Sounds like a fan to me. Have you opened the case to visually inspect everything?

Another possibility is the hard drive, but from what you said, it is most likely either the power supply fan or the CPU fan.

Open the case and with the computer off, of course, check both fans for free movement and so forth.

Let us know what you find.

Cheers,

While you're in there anyway clean out the dust. Can't hurt....
