I installed a maxtor 20gb hard drive on a pentium 133 useing the maxtor software. After the new drive was installed with the software the jumpers were set for the new drive as master and the old as slave the bios indicated the old maxtor is installed as slave but I can not find the drive.Either drive will work as mastor but none as slave. I also noticed if power is removed from the slave the system will not boot it stops at delete if ribbon cable is removed from slave all normal.Any help or sugestions appreciated. Both drives are maxtor.
Thank you in advance.

First, a P-133 is not likely to be able to use anything larger than 8GB hard drives, due to a BIOS drive size limitation.

Second, you have to have an operating system installed for the drive to boot, or at least command.com, if it is usable by the system at all, and that requires an active partition being set.

I don't think you'll be able to get a 20GB drive to work with a P-133. You'll have to go to a drive that is 8GB or smaller. I ran across the same problem with my neices machine, it will handle up to P-200. Wouldn't boot past the same spot as yours, to enter CMOS. Mine, for that matter, is a P-200 MMX now, and I doubt if I can use a drive larger than 8GB. Haven't tried...still using my old 2.8GB Maxtor.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?

The 20gb drive works fine in master maxtor provides software to overcome the bios problem .The problem is the old drive appears only in
the bios it does not show up in windows.
Thank you for your help

When you say you can't find the slave drive even though the BIOS says it's there, does that mean it's not showing up in My Computer when you get to Windows?

Assuming the jumper is set correctly on the slave drive, I can think of 2 things that could possibly be causing your problem.

First, when you autodetect the slave, is the BIOS calling it a Type 47 (or something like that) and are the parameters showing? If so, are they correct? You sometimes have to manually type in the hard drive parameters for older drives (i.e., cylinders, heads, sectors, etc.) in the BIOS.

Second, some older hard drives are very picky about what mode they will run in. If it's set to AUTO in Standard CMOS Settings, try changing it to LBA, Large, and Normal, restarting between each selection.

Hope this helps... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
