My cd-rom is locking up every time I insert an audio cd. I've to reboot system to open the tray and get the cd out. I took the drive and connected to my friends system and it worked fine. I brought his cd-rom drive and installed in my system and it works fine. But mine locks up.

I've a SONY CD-RW as master and DELTA CD-ROM as slave. The SONY works fine, no problem. I've tried changing master/slave combination but the DELTA do not read audio cd's.

System setup as follows :
WD HDD (master), ZIP (slave) -->Primary
CD-RW (master), CD-ROM (slave) -->Secondary
ASUS K7M MOBO, Athlon CPU,
SB X-Gamer Sound Card, Creative Annihilator 2 Video Card
Windows ME

I'm not sure whats causing the problem. If I can delete the cd-rom from the system and reboot, I get the same problem. If I can delete all the driver and installation information from my system and let windows configure cd-rom again, will it work ?

Any one can help me ?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks

Sounds like a driver problem. If the other drive works, and yours works on the other system, It shouldn't be the drive itself. Try booting in Safe mode, and removing the CD ROM drive, all copies of it that are listed, and re-install it. Also make sure the jumper on back is set as Slave. Also check in BIOS and see that the drive is set to Auto. It will be the Secondary IDE, Slave or drive 2. Some have them listed as 0 and 1, it would be 1. Some list 1 and 2, it's 2. Just depends on your BIOS. You might also try swapping them, make the CD ROM Master and the other one Slave.

Dose it matter if in the BIOS it set to CDROM ? Or should I set to AUTO and
then reboot it ?
By the way what files I should remove to remove the drivers ? Are you talking about mscdex, also removing from the config.sys file ?

Thanks

If your IDE settings in BIOS have something for CD ROM, that would be ok, bu tusually it's all hard drive settings, for cylinders, heads and sectors. Auto usually works.

To remove drivers, go to Device Manager, in Safe Mode, and remove the CD ROM itself. That will remove drivers too, and don't worry about config.sys. With Windows the config.sys lines are only there to use the CD ROM in DOS, and when you install it again it should check the config.sys file too, and add lines if necessary. Installing the CD ROM again will either install drivers again, or give you the option to use the existing drivers. Choose the option to install new drivers.

Thanks for your reply.
I removed the CD-ROM in safe mode for windows, but when I rebooted the system, it did not give me the option to install new drivers. All I've seen is the msg, reading new hardware configuration or something like that, basically reading the changes, thats all.

I tried reading audio cd, it failed again. Same error.

Can you think about something else ? I probably have to buy a new cd-rom.

Appreciate your help.

i know this might sound daft BUT is the audio output from cdrom connected to your motherboard? cause i think u can only have one cd audio to mobo???

Only one of the cd-rom ( thats the one is not reading audio cd ) analog audio out is connected with the sound card. Nothing is connected with the motherboard, because the motherboard is without audio.
I use one cd-rom ( the one is not working ) to play audio cd and games cd.
The other one is for burning cd's.

It reads all systems, games cd but locks up on audio cd.

I'm not too familiar with Windows ME, but I'm beginning to wonder if this has anything to do with sound card drivers. It reads data CD's fine, but locks up with audio CD's. Does this mean the entire computer locks up? and what is the specific error message, if any?

From here I would remove the sound card in Safe Mode, from Device Manager, and reinstall it. You might also check the manufactrer of the sound card's website, they might have a new driver posted, or a patch for this problem if it's a common one.
Check Device Manager in normal, not Safe Mode, and see if the sound card has any yellow "splats" beside it indicating and IRQ or DMA conflict. If so, usually removing and reinstalling will fix that.

Thanks again for your time.

There are no conflicts in the system, everything seems to be working fine. I've tried so many different things and now I'm getting frustrated.

I've all the new DRIVERS for the sound card and all the drivers are for WINDOWS ME.

The only thing I've not done so far is sound card removal. I'll try that now and reinstall drivers, see if that works.

The other thing I'm thinking running windows in the SAFE MODE anf troubleshooting from there, see anything wrong with "win.ini" and "system.ini" files. What do you think ?

Appreciate everyones help.

Going into Safe Mode and checking Device Manager is a good idea, but before you do that, check in Control Panel, Add/Remove programs to see if you can uninstall the sound drivers you've already installed. Then boot to Safe Mode. There may be multiple listings for your sound card there that you can't see in regular Windows mode. These "ghosts" can cause conflicts, and since you can't be sure which is the one Windows is using, remove ALL references to your sound card from Device Manager and then restart. Win ME should then re-detect your sound card and prompt you for the drivers.

Hope this helps! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks everyone for suggestion and help.
The cd-rom is just not going to work. Its not worthy to try to fix it anymore. I'll get a new cd-rom drive. Appreciate all the help. I've learned few things going through this issue.

What do you all think of KENWOOD 72X ?

Is it worth the money or should I just buy a TOSHIBA 48X or something like that ?

Thanks
