Does a 486DX - 66 mhz support a 2.7 GB harddisk? If it does how is the performance.

I would say yes. Without knowing the BIOS version I couldn't say for sure but it's a good guess that it does. Performance will depend on what "mode" the drive can operate in and the motherboard supports as well as the speed at which the drive spins. But on an old 486... hard drive performance won't be what's holding you back.

Depends on the type of controller actually, if it's an onboard controller, it will most likely handle anything up to 8.4GB, or maybe 8.6 is the BIOS limit. If it's a controller card plugged into an ISA slot, it's likely to only handle 540MB. In that case you'll need an enhanced IDE (EIDE) controller card. Only way to find out is totry it if it's an ISA card. Won't cause any trouble, it simply will show the drive as 540MB no matter what you do.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?

If you do have one of the old controller cards. You can buy a new one at www.onsale.com (http://www.onsale.com) for about $15.00 or so.( finding a isa card may be hard..good luck)

Also depending on the type of hard drive you may be able to buy software or download it for free from the manufacture that allows you to get pass the 540 mb limit.

In old systems made before 1994 the BIOS and the IDE interface had limitations that keep hard drive usable space down to 500MB or so.Newer BIOS use "Translation" when "talking" to the disk. ( This is as "layman" as I can make it). An good indication of a "Translating BIOS" (but not a sure and fast rule) is an option for LBA in the Bios setup . (LBA stands for Large Block Addressing if I remember correctly.). I am not sure if newer systems( made in the last 3 years) still use this "enhanced BIOS" but older systems will. The newer controller cards may in fact use their onboard BIOS to display the disk geometry. ( when you setup your BIOS to auto. find the disk parameters the mainboard BIOS talks to the Controller's BIOS to get the disk geometry)
