HD is recognized by the bios. Not seen by win95 so i tried to fdisk. When fdisking get the message that the drive is write protected. As a result the drive is not partitioned. This is not a new drive but was working ok until the grand kids got on my system.

Is there any way to save this HD?? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

As far as I know hard drives can't be write protected. The attributes can be changed to read only, but that's about the only write protection available, and not easy to do unless you know what you're doing. They are meant to be written on.

That sounds more like a virus than anything else. Try booting to a McAffee or Norton emergency disk and see if it finds anything.

Check here for F-Prot's latest AV, 3.08. Download it and run it. It'll create a floppy to use at bootup. You;ll have to boot from a bootable disk, then run f-prot, but it's a good piece of anti-virus software.

Check the BIOS and see if the hard drive virus protection is on. It can prevent the boot record from being written. Another possibility is that the disk has drive software to enable support of a large hard drive on an early system. The recovery method depends on what program was used.

Good call Reid, I didn't think about the BIOS antivirus setting, which can cause similar issues.

Thanks to all who replied to my problem. Here's where I'm at.

The anti virus in the bios is off. There appears to be no virus problem.

In running NDD the program seems to be checking for Dos partition but it is very slow. Why it's so slow I don't know but it's still working so I'm letting it do its thing. It went to about 7% complete and then slowed down. In 24 hours it's now at 9%.

Here's hoping this works..

On the thought that a HD can't be write protect I queston this based on an experience with my daughter's Gateway. Everytime she started the system it went into scan disk reporting that the system wasn't shut done properly. Even when it was shut down properly the same problem existed. I tried to fdisk it and it reported that it was write protected. However, in this case the system still saw the drive with a drive letter so I proceded to fromat the disk. The HD was fine after that. Of course we backed up the disk b/4 formating so we lost no data. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
