I don't know much about computers so help me out. When I put in a CD into the CD Rom drive it won't pick it up and the LED blinks then shuts off and doesn't pick up the CD. I just recently installed a CD Rewriter and then problems started happening with my PC freezing up and things like that. I removed the CD Rewriter from my computer and then the CD Rom won't work anymore what can I do?

could you post your IRQ settings and device list? Have you checked for conflicts? Want jumper setting are required per installation manual.
Please advise. Check all cable connections(use appropriate safety and static prevention steps) and advise on what occurred

Have you changed the jumper settings on your CD drives ? If they are on the same IDE channel then one has to be master and the other has to slave. Also is your BIOS detecting the cd drives properly and the drive letter ?

You can go to contol panel->system->device manager and then click on both cd drives and check their properties if they are correct. Make sure auto insert is enable under properties.

Hope this helps. If not post some more detail about your system, we'll go from there.

I have a HP Pavillion 6553 and I run windows 98 and I checked the device manager and the drive has a letter and everything looks alright. I removed the CD Rom drive then rebooted my computer and it still doesn't work. The CD rewriter I have is external and connected to the USB port

Can you check if you have any conflicts in your system, like De Man was mentioning ?

Removing the device from the device manager do not remove the drivers. You have to load windows in safe mode and then remove the device. As soon as your pc boots you have to hit "ctrl" key right before windows 98 logo show up to go the menu where you can select to stsrt windows in safe mode. You can disconnect the CD-RW and open windows in safe mode, remove cd-rom and reboot system, see it works, then you know CD-RW is causing problem.

Check the following page, which describes how to check for a conflict in your system. Check for conflicts first before you try safe mode. http://support.hp.com/showpage/cat_id/30343854/id/bph01717.html

Hope this helps. Let us know what are you doing.
