the problem is as follows:
1. after playing a DVD on my PC, i ejected the DVD from the drive.
for some reason, i had to reboot( restart ) my windows 98. i do
see the D: drive on my computer.the light on the Drive always blinks. i am not able to open it by pressing the eject button. i am not sure the deletion of the d: drive is the cause of the problem. i do not know how to fix this one ( both hardware and the drive one ).
thanks
Pradeep

More system info would help, it might have something to do with the solution.

My sister has a Compaq that had the exact same problem with the original CD ROM drive. Several calls to tech support didn't resolve the issue, they insisted it was a software problem, even though this drive would also kick the CD out in the middle of running the restore disk. How can it be a software problem when it malfunctions in DOS too? Got the same answer..

She replaced the drive and has never had a problem since, and I tried it on this machine, it did the exact same thing...refused to open except by the manual eject method, using a large paper clip straightened out. That finally proved it was a hardware problem, even after Compaq insisted it was software related, even refusing to try troubleshooting or replacing it...

I would say take the drive back and see if you can get it replaced, I think it's a bad drive.

Hi paleo,
it was behaving fine for last two years. is there any reason for not seeing the D: drive. when i run add new hardware , windows does not detect the CD/DVD ROM drive. it is no more under service warranty. It was purchased during dec, 1998. if the original warranty is for 3 years, i will contact DELL( from where i purchased ) and see what can be done. thanks for the reply and feedback.
