trauma to hard disk

Hi everyone
my hard disk felt from the top of the PC to the floor on its back while scan was runing ; it made a loud steel rub sound for some seconds ; when trying to use it again it repeats a sequence of sounds as if it is trying to start but without result ; what happened ? are the data lost ?

The drive likely suffered fatal damage in that fall. This Quantum (http://www.quantum.com/src/whitepapers/wp_sps.htm) link describes how even a seemingly minor shock can damage a hard drive.
