http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif When booting up PC, error message 2F8 i/o conflict. This is for Serial port 2. If I change the interrupt, then it shows the new address, plus 2F8 (and Serial port 1 3F8). If I disable one or both ports, then the 2F8 still shows in the bootup process, but I don't get the i/o conflict error, but I get to the ESCD successful...... message and no further. Any clues for the clueless?? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I think you're trying to change the wrong thing, it's not the IRQ but the I/O address that's causing the problem. Go back to the settings and find one that uses the same IRQ, but a different I/O address, and see if that helps. Something else is trying to use the same I/O address as COM2.

You might also highlight Computer in Device Manager, click Properties and check the button for I/O addresses. This will list all I/O addresses in use and should mark any that are conflicting. That will tell you what to look for. You can also see IRQ listing, and DMA by the same method.

Soon as I come up with all the answers...they change the questions!!

Sounds like the modem is using 2F8 (COM 2). You should be able to safely disable the internal (onboard) COM 2 port and this will resolve the problem with the conflict. If you need the COm port, then I suggest moving the modem to another IRQ and I/O port. Typically COM 4/ IRQ 11 or COM 3/IRQ 10, if either is free for use. If neither is available, then it looks like your stuck with your current config. If you put the modem on say COM 3/IRQ4 or COm 4/IRQ3, then your going to get conflicts and lock ups also. hope this helps.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif Thanks for the advice. However, I have looked through my setup menu and can find no obvious conflict - I also removed the connectors to the m/board for both serial ports to no avail. Cannot get windows up due to this problem, so cannot look through the Device Manager. Any other ideas? Cheers!
