i have a emachines 366...actually this is my third one. the first had a fried modem, the second one had a bad hard drive, a bad motherboard, and a bad power supply (all within 14 months!), and the third one (i just received it on the 16th) has started making a constant, incessant noise. it's a low-pitched whir of some sort and it started when i turned it on for the second time. i called the mfgr and they said they'd send me a power supply. do you think this will fix it? i need to act fast because they're only giving me a 90-day warranty on it! thanks!

Hey Helpme,

Have you opened the case to give it the 'ear' inspection? If not, do so. You should be able to pinpoint the noise a little better.

Many things inside the case could make the racket you describe. Could be the fan on the power supply, the cooling fan on the cpu, the hard drive or even the CD-ROM.

Do a visual inspection as well when you have the case open. Check to make sure everything is tight. That is of course, with the computer OFF. Then, power her up and listen carefully. Let us know what happens.

Cheers,

Big Blue 66

thanks for the advice. i did just what you said and it turns out it was just the fan on the motherboard. the mfgr said they were backordered, but i could get one for around 10.00 at circuit city or somewhere. does this sound right? thanks again!!

Yep, Comp USA has CPU fans starting at about $10, Circuit City, Office Max and Radio Shack should be about the same, and a top notch fan should be no more than $25. Make sure you get one with ball bearings.
