Greetings.
I am in urgent need of help. I am starting finals and need to have my internet
connection at my apartment.
Monday morning I connected to the internet and checked the school web page. I
then disconnected and left the computer on until the evening. When I tried to
connect then, I get the message to check my DUN settings. I use three different
ISPs and I get this message or user ID/password is invalid for all three ISPs. On
one of them, it just keeps asking me over and over to enter the password until it says
the computer I am dialing has disconnected me. It has my password saved for each
one, but it still gives me that error. I tried using Juno ISP and it would let me get my
email, but my connection was extremely slow.
I am using a Compaq Presario 5070 pentium 350 with 96 megs RAM. Win 98.
Thanks!
Andy

It seems like an unlikely glitch if it affecting three dial-up settings. Did anyone have access to the computer and possibly changed your settings?

Have you tried clearing the saved password and typed it again?

Nobody had access to the computer. My wife and I are the only ones ever there and she was at work all day. I cleared the passwords and retyped them in, and then unistalled the dial up adapter and reinstalled, but the same thing is happening.

You might try removing and re-installing the modem in Control Panel. For the problem to be common to all dial-ups it might be modem or com port related.

That reminds me that I wanted to ask if it could be a problem with a modem sending the information. I will try uninstalling and reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, should I try messing with the com ports?
thanks

Does your dialup adapter have the TCP/IP protocol assigned to it?

Here is a link to a well-illustrated guide for Installing TCP/IP and dialup (http://www.kellogg.nwu.edu/kis/docs/howto/network/networkconfig/tcp-ip.htm). Of course, your DNS address will be different.

Mkay, this is my career, dial up internet tech support. So, I think I can fix it.

First, in your Network, under control panel, make sure the following is installed.

Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial up adapter
Tcp/ip.

If you have aol, other junk might be in there, if you have a nic card, othat stuff might be in there. If you have aol junk in there, but you don't use aol, remove it. You will need either your windows cd or .cab files on your hard drive in order to make changes in this.

After you verify that is what you have in network, we next want to delete your .pwl files. These are your password list files. If one of those is corrupt (namely, the one you are currently using), it can give password errors. To do this, do the following

Click Start
Click find
Click files and folders

In the named field, type in *.pwl, make it look in c:\, and click find now.
Delete all that it finds
close this box.

Click start,
Click Logoff

At the enter windows password, type in your username to logon to the internet, leave the password blank.

Click ok. We want the password blank so you don't ahve to type in a password to get into windows in the future.

Once in windows, try it again.

If this doesn't work, go back into network under control panel, and removed client for ms networks, dial up adapter, and tcp/ip. Basically, remove everything, unless you have a nic card, then leave the nic and one protocol for the nic. Click ok. Reboot. When it comes back up, go back into network. Click add, click adapter, then click add again. Highlight microsoft on the left, highlight dial up adapter on the right, click ok. It adds microsoft family login, dial up adapter, and tcp/ip in windows 98, and it adds client for ms networks, client for netware networks, dial up adapter, ipx/spx, and netbeui if you are using windows 95. If in 98, click add, click client, and click add again. highlight microsoft on the left, highlight client for ms networks on the right. click ok. removed microsoft family logon.

In windows 95, click add, click protocol, click add again. On the left click microsoft, on the right highlight tcp/ip. Click ok. Removed client for netware, ipx/spx, and netbeui.

Click ok., and it should copy files, and then ask you to restart. If it gives you a version conflict, always click yes to keep the existing file.

Restart, then try connecting again.

If this doesn't work, tell me, I have one more fix, but we won't even go there if this here works, cause it is a pain in the buttocks.

Thanks Reid and Reddogg for responding. Reid, I checked to make sure the TCP/IP protocol was assigned to it and checked out that article. This did not resolve the problem.

Reddogg, I have not tried your suggestions yet. Once I leave the computer lab, I will go home and try. I'll prolly give an update tomorrow as to what happened.

thanks

OK, Reddogg, I tried everything you said and still no luck. So then I uninstalled the dial up adapter etc. again and used DOS to extract the .cab files to reinstall them. This did not help. Then I borrowed a couple of modems from a friend and tried them. Still the same problem. So if you have any more suggestions, I would be glad to try them.
