    Post Compaq Power supply problem

I have a Compaq Presario 5184. I have no power (lights, fan, drives) at all. I've checked all cabels.

My problem is that I can not tell what type of power supply it is. The Mobo connector is AT ( 2- 6 pin connectors, black to black in the middle). The power output is listed as +-5 and +-3 volts on the power supply. The power switch for the computer has a 5 pin connector pluged into the mobo. This sounds more like a ATX format.

I have a spare AT power supply to plug in, but I am afraid to because of possible damage.

    Thanks for any help

Don't use the standard AT or ATX power supply.
Compaq has Proprietary power supplies for some of the systems.
That 5 wire power switch connector to the M/B is the killer.

Your going to be forced to get a new one.
Good luck finding someone who supports that thing .
    Other than Compaq.

Rick is correct, Compaq uses proprietary everything possible, including Operating System. When you see the price tag, you'll know why the computer itself was a deal...Compaq makes up the difference when it breaks down.

    I'm not a happy camper here :-(

The warrany expired in april and compaq now wants $20 just to say hello to me in tech support. Their parts dept works banker hours so I can't even get prices.

Rick- are you suggesting that I buy the power switch first? I wonder if I could just jump it, turn off all power mangament and run the machine off a power strip?

    Thanks Guys..........Crom

    Progress report:

I checked out the power switch with a meter. Of the 5 wires, 1 is a ground, 3 are for LED lights, and 1 is a monentary switch to signal the power supply to turn on. they all seem to be working properly.

I then took apart the power supply and found a blown 3.15 amp fuse in there. I'm going to have to travel to find the fuse, so I may not be able to do that today.

Does anyone have any experience replacing power supply fuses? I wish I had one here so I could find out if it is just going to blow again. Is anyone reading this?

I know power supplies have fuses, but I've never had to replace one. Will it blow again? Depends on what blew it this time. If it was a power surge, probably not. If it's a short in the power supply, you can't buy enough fuses...

    Bad news

The fuse blows as soon as I turn on the power supply, even with it totally dis-connected from the computer.

I guess I'll be talking to compaq tommorrow about a new power supply.

    cromwell....

Man...this is a bad deal for you. I hope you have some luck with Compaq...but my guess is you won't. I had a friend recently....they tried to charge him $870 bucks for a stupid stick of 128meg ram (you can buy this for about $100 bucks at Costco)! You might want to consider that you can build a totally awesome system for around $1200 these days. Don't pay Compaq cadellac prices for VW parts (that also don't work for very long)...at best!

I saw a "post" a few months back....something like this:

"If you buy a Compaq computer...make sure you buy two of them. That way, in a week you can bury the first one...and use the second one to cover it up with!" There's also a 12-Step program being started for Compaq users...you might want to see if a group is forming in your area?

    WOW I have a new Compaq 7000series(7AP140)AMD-751 CPU to PCI Bridge{Athlon 'Thunderbird' 650-1.2G 1.7-1. 8v @ 800Mhz- Performance Rated-PR1063-(estimated) This is upgradeable to way above 1000Mhz-
Front side bus speed: 2x 100Mhz (200Mhz data rate)
There are 3 memory slots each w/ capacity of 512MB
    It came installed w/ DImMsynchdram 128MB/32(on bank3)-1 and 2 are empty and waiting {Micron}
system BIOS is flashable (but surface mounted)
does NOT support EDD(enhanced disk drive)
HDD: fixed GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 01- primary ide comtroller (dual fifo)30 gig (20 freeNvidia TnT 2 model 64- 16MB video, 56MB AGP, Texture mem 72MB
    Compaq DVD-Rom SD-612B
    IDE- CD R/RW 4x4x32
SB-Audio 128, suckky winmodem (which I seldom use) I have external Westall ADSL - 640/90-(I seem to almost always be @ around 500kbps dwn)
WIN98SE ('tweaked' by me) The main thing so far with this Compaq has been to get rid of all of the drivers/duplicates, Compaq preinstalls EVERY Possible driver for EVERY possible thing you MIGHT possibly have installed on your individual pc) so you need to get rid of the ones that dont apply to you , otherwise your pc is going thru like 5 different additional processes to just get to the one that it NEEDS. I also had the standard shutdown/restart problems to fix. Asides from this.. THIS Compaq has been Very dependable and is Very Fast!!!!!!! Not only on the internet {{screams}}...but also the speed of apps/programs running, opening and closing correctly and smoothly. excellent ! Adaptec CD 4.0 software is cookin' and no 'coasters' (after the initial 1st try)
Have put MANY hours ( I usually reboot INfrequently... and am online 24/7/365. This has 128 ram now and can go to 512 x 3...not real concerned about EDD right now.

    Comments.... Critique's ??
**would love to compare benchmark analyisies with anyone**

    Hey Tom,

Luckily the machine is not mine- just working on it for a friend. I've heard the horror stories about compaq parts already so I called my friend and got a OK for up to $200 for a power supply. Happily compaq (or some company called service electronics) is sending one out for $57. That is a high price for a power supply, but not totaly outragous.

I'm expecting the part tomorrow. I'll let you know later this weekend if it works out.
