Thread: Modem being used by other programme?

  1. #1

Question Modem being used by other programme?

Hope to find a solution for this problem.
I get this message everytime i click the CONNECT button. It's something like this:
"the modem is being used by other programme or applications. Please close the application and try again"
How can i be running any application with the modem when i just started booting up my computer. I have tried using Ctrl+Alt+Delete to shut down the other programme that is running behind. Still the same thing occur when i wants to connect. I did try uninstall and installing the "Dial-Up Networking" folder too. Please help. (DEPRESSED)

I've seen this a couple of times and if I remember correctly it has to do with WinFax Pro 8.0(do you have that installed?) or it was something to do with more than one set of modem drivers installed (csusing IRQ probs). Give us your modem brand, Operating System and what all you use the modem for and I'm sure someone can help ya.

    What kind of modem?

If it is an internal pci modem then it is probably a software modem. Any kind of other communication program will interfere with the ability to use it. Bitfax, Quicklink etc (any fax program). Check your startup folder on the start menu for any fax software, check any games for an auto connect feature, and check for any ad based software (AdAware wil check for them), also some keyboard have "Internet" keys on them make sure that they are not set up to autodial. Remove the fax stuff from the startup folder, disable the autoconnect in the games.....

After removing the links in the sartup folder you will then have to manually start the fax software.

It is best to save the recovery for a last resort option. Usually something like this was a software or driver problem and could have been fixed. Also without finding out what caused the problem in the first place you open yourself up to having it happen again, especially if it was software related. When you reinstall the program that caused it then it will happen again. I've done things to really screwup my system and then recovered too quickly only to find that something very simple was needed to be done in order to fix the problem.

    Exclamation

    I agree 300% w/ mjc.

Useing a recovery disk is the last resort When u use that u loose all of the additional things u have installed (all files, downloads, documents,)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So that is not the thing to do in most situations. We could have almost certainly found and corrected ur problem w/out that.
