Have the modems been working prior to your obtaing them?
Do you have any other systems to test the modems in?
Greetings, I've gotten my hands on some old Modems and 2 486's. I've searched the Web by Modem name for the drivers, installed them and nothing.
Can someone please help me or should I just invest a few dollars for something to put into an old 486 that I'm only tinkering with.

Hi Tobias,
Just a thought here. Can you tell if the modems are hardware or software modems? Not sure how to tell really, unless there are labels on them. A product model ID that has HCF or HSF or Lucent, etc. will signify a software modem. Those have to be installed using the setup software that comes with them. It doesn't sound like you have access to the setup software though. At any rate, the whole point may be moot if they are hardware modems.
Can't remember how to check for conflicts on a 486. However, one thought is to check your autoexec.bat and config.sys file for references to the modem. I would think that with a 486, you would need command lines in the startup files to enable the modem.
Hang tight and somebody else will surely come along with a few ideas. In the meantime, check the startup files and any labels on the modems and get back to us with that info.
Hopefully, our Grand Master of them all, Paleo Pete, will stop by. He is a whiz with old 486s. Might be 'cause he's old, too. hehe
Or maybe it's because when he bends over the old 486s with deep intent, his hair doesn't get in his eyes. hehe Sorry Pete, couldn't resist.
Cheers,

Try disabling COM2 in BIOS. It's serial port 2F8, I forget what BIOS section it's in. (CRS Strikes again...) Should also be IRQ 3.
If it's a LT winmodem, HCF or HSF it has to be installed by software, not simply by installing the drivers. Look through the driver files for an install.exe or setup.exe file, run it.
Also boot into Safe Mode and remove all modems listed, start over from scratch with COM2 disabled in BIOS.

Thanks for the help thus far....The FDD ID is: M4TMM3366GS. In the Modem it reads: Modem MAster6000 Rev 2.2 On the chip it reads: PCtel, PCT288-1A.
Can seem to find the drivers for this specific one. ANy leads??
This Link points to a PC Tel page that might help identify the modem. This Driver Page lists a 388 chip, but not a 288.
Windrivers also has a PC TEL Forum where someone is looking for a driver for the same chip, no replies yet...you might keep an eye on it.
If that link doesn't work, or doesn't show up as a link, click the PC Tel Forum link Here

This link lists a PCT288 chip. It may work.

I have some links that list older modems. I'll gather them and email them to you.
