Keyboard stops working

I have an abit kt7 raid with a slot A amd 900 mhz thunderbird. not sure if mbo
is kt7 or kt7A. bought it from tc computers in december 2000

my keyboard just started acting very strange. in fact after a while it
will just quit. it will work for about 5 to 15 minutes from a cold start
in the morning. i have a memorex kb mx2500. it has 4 leds in the upper
right corner. it appears things get confused after a while. in normal
operation there is one green led. while typing I might here a click from
the PC (similar to the old character over run click) then the keyboard
starts working strange and eventually goes dead. sometimes when it goes
down all the led lights will flash simultaneously or the lights will all go
out.

I called tc computers tech support. we looked at cpu temp. it is ok about
40C. I took the cover off as they suggested to let things cool but no
effect still the kb stops. they think i should disconnect everything but
the display board including the hard drives???? seems strange.. then they
are suggesting the next step will be to clear the cmos.... and that seems
strange.... I don't know how that is relevant to or will fix the problem.

I got a can of pressurized air to blow out the dust but no effect.

What is happening?

This is a big problem since I can hardly use this PC. Thanks for any
suggestions

Memorex products in general are kind of at the 'low' end.
Can you borrow another keyboard to see if that solves the problem?

Seems like an easier test than reconfiguring your whole setup.

Sounds like a bad keyboard, tjay's suggestion to try a different one is the way to go.

I powered down the system. then switched to a Belkin KB which i used with my docking station for my Dell laptop. This time when I boot I get a beeping buzzing sound almost immediately.

I also noticed something else. I was keeping things simple not starting too many programs and typing short messages. when I clicked on intenet explorer icon i heard a beep and the green led on my keyboard when out. THIS IS NOT REPEATABLE however.

Never heard of that before. Was the Memorex hooked up to a PS/2 port?

Is the Belkin also a PS/2, or do you have to use an adapter?
Is it in any way customized for use with the docking station?

This might sound like left field but...

I bought a Memorex keyboard at best buy (free with rebate!). It actually requires 3 double a batteries for some advanced functions (not sure, never used it yet). The only reason I thought it might be the batteries is the fact that the lights are acting strange...

The memorex kb is a TS1000.

Hey psabi and tjaymadison,

thanks for the ideas. belkin is a ps2, no adapter and standard ps2 connetion on my notebook docking station. no battery in the memorex.

I left the pc running for about two hours this afternoon and when i returned the green normal light was still on on my keyboard. I was able to type for a while but upon launching iexplorer all the keyboard lights started flashing and the keyboard was dead. iexplorer does not reliably trigger the problem. the pc has been off for about 40 minutes and I am just typing now and just heard a 1 second long beeping buzz followed by all the lights on my kb going out. i have a short time before the next event finally puts communication with my kb out.

This a real shot in the dark:

In BIOS setup, do you have an option called 'Wake on Keyboard'?

If so, disable it. My advice -- Disable all Power Management options in BIOS.

Hey Tj, the power manegement stuff did not work. I don't trust tc computers tech support since they say the next step is to clear the cmos. I don't know if:

1. does this makes sense.

2. what happens to my system and what are the ramifications/work after clearing the cmos?

Doesn't sound like clearing is warranted just yet.

I'd try setting the BIOS to 'Load Default Values' first.
If there is an option for USB KB support, make sure it is disabled.

These are really out in left field...
TJay do you think the Keyboard.drv could be corrupted?
The KB connector on the I/O panel loose?
Mobo shorting in the I/O area?
Everytime I do a MSN Messenger update something (on any OS and system) screws up for a couple of boots.
I told you they were out there

By now, I'm beginning to suspect some sort of gremlin like you mentioned.
They are out there somewhere, aren't they?

Rick -- Try this:

Click Start > Run, type SFC in the Open box, click OK, then click Start.

This will run System File Checker, and check for corrupted files.
If any are found, it will prompt you to insert the Windows CD.
