Post Linux issues w/ a modem...

This question is directed to all the Linux pros out there:
I have a USR/3Com 56k fax-modem and the software drivers (the *.RPM file for use w/ Linux) that I downloaded from the web site for the specific model, and I have tried using the RPM file, but it STILL won't recognize my modem. What can I check/do/try to get my modem up and going? Is there an alternative method that someone out there uses that might work better? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
    Jeff

From what I have been able to figure out is that some of the software modems will work with Linux, but only if the .RPM and the kernel are compatible...a big if in my book. Basically see of you can find a hardware compatiblity list for your version and see if your modem is on the list...

So, are you saying that the .rpm files are designed for specific kernels? Or should they work for any version of linux. I'll try to find it on a list somewhere. Thanks for the help.

The file for my modem says it is for the Redhat 6.1 and may work with others...but in a round about way says don't hold your breath... , basically I think that it may be because of certain features in each diferent "Linux" that don't get passed around for several kernel builds(takes a while to get incorporated into all the different versions floating around)...

Hey, thanks for the help mjc, and Donna. I think I'm going to go ahead and close this topic. Basically, I just need to find a version that works w/ the RPM file, so I'll be off to start a looooong download on my Windows 56k machine.
