    Post dial up networking

I have wasted almost all evening trying to connect to the internet on a computer that I am working on. First: Using Windows 95B. This is an older
Pionex Pentium classic 133 computer, not to bad really, but I digress.No.2:
The owner said it had been hit by lightning so he had been told. The computer works excellent with the exception of the modem. I installed a Creative ISA modem just to see what would happen but it was never recognized as working. Thirdly: The old modem in my viewpoint works. I can hear it attempt to dial and wait for the verification of password. The modem is a ViVa 33.6. All error messages refer back to dial networking configuration settings. I can't find any settings that are screwy. Suggestions please.

did you make sure that "wait for dial tone" is not checked in properties for that connection?

sounds really simple but has messed me up in the past.
