Question INVALID SETTINGS IN MS DOS

I BUILT A NEW PC, P-3 733EB, WHEN I INSTALLED WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION WINDOWS INSTALLED SMOOTH, THEN IT WOULDNT BOOT UP, I FOUND OUT THAT MY MEMORY WAS BAD, SO I EXCHANGED THE MEMORY AND MY COMPUTOR HAS BEEN OPERATING FINE EVER SINCE, THE PROBLEM IS, UPON BOOT UP IT SAYS INVALID SETTINGS IN MS-DOS, ALSO UPON SHUUTING DOWN, IT DOESNT SAY WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN IT JUST SHUTS DOWN. ID REALY LIKE TO REMOVE AND FIX THE MS DOS PROBLEM AND I WOULD LIKE WINDOWS TO SHUT DOWN PROPERLY.

Can you post exactly what the invalid MS-DOS settings message says? Is there any more information given than that? Press the Pause/Break key on your keyboard to pause the screen so you can read it, then press Enter to continue booting.

If your new computer is using an ATX case/power supply, it's possible it is shutting down normally, especially since it's a very fast machine. When you choose Shut Down, if may go to black screen and then turn the computer off so fast it doesn't have time to display the shutting down screen (and the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" screen won't display because the PC automatically shuts down). My slower AMD K62-450 only displays the shutting down screen for a fraction of a second before it turns off. Unless scandisk is running each time you restart or the boot menu appears, asking you to start in Safe Mode because Windows was not shut down properly, I don't think you have to worry about not seeing the shutting down screen.

    Hope this helps...
    Kim

Perhaps you could send me copys of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
    To do this:
    1. Go to Start, Run, and type
    sysedit
    2. You'll get the System Configuration Editor, with CONFIG.SYS in the first pane. Copy the contents to an email to me.
    3. Do the same thing with AUTOEXEC.BAT

The problem may be in MSDOS.SYS, but that's more complicated, so we'll start with just these.
