Needs right way to install WIN 98

[Inquiring]

Hello..what is the correct step by step procedure to re-install WIN 98 SE?
I am going to re-format my HDD and want to back up my data files and then re-install WIN 98 from annoriginal factory CD. Does anyone have a summary web site for this or a procedure including making anew system floppy to allow the CD drive to copy the files to the HDD?

There are many variables and preferences. I would suggest you start with an entirely new partition arrangement. Follow the link below for excellent advice.

Before you do anything, you should make a bootable floppy using the Win98 CD. Insert a virus free floppy in the drive along with the Win98 CD. Choose Browse The CD. Choose Tools, then MTSUTIL, double click on "fat32ebd". That will create a floppy with all the files you need to run Fdisk partioning tool and format, etc.

After the partitioning and formatting,(which is explained in the above link) assuming you've created two partitions, on the D: drive,type"MD Win98" then type "CD Win98". Now, type "Copy E:/Win98" and the Win98 files will be copied to the Win98 Directory on the D: partition.

When the cab files are done, simply type "setup" and Win98 will begin the install. Be sure to answer no to the Startup disk since you already have one.

If you still have win98 up and running, you can make a start up disk easily by going to Start\Settings\Control Panel and double click Add/Remove Programs then click the Startup Disk tab. Have a clean floppy ready and click Create Disk. Or you can make one on a friend's computer, bring your own floppy disk.

Quick Guide to a win98 Fresh Start has very good instructions. Hard Disk Partitioning and Formatting Procedure will help if partitioning is necessary, and formatting will of course be necessary.

Partitioning usually is not necessary unless you want to switch to FAT32 or create more partitions. Creating secondary partitions depends on how much total drive space you have available. If you have 4GB or more, Yes, multiple partitions might be a good idea. Under 4 GB I would leave it one partition in most cases. A 4GB drive can be split into two 2 GB drives and it will work well, smaller than that I would stay with one.

Before you go roaring into the Install of Win98 SE....I would make sure you have the DRIVERS for all of the devices you will have on the computer...ie Video drivers, Modem drivers, Sound card, Printer, Scanner, PC Cam etc....having them available prior to doing all of this makes it less frustrating if (when) Win 98 doesnt find em.
