Post Whacked Out Shortcut / Icons

Here is a problem that keeps showing up. It has happened to every computer I have ever owned that had Windows 98 first or second edition on it. When I click on an Icon on the desktop or in the task bar, instead of it taking me to the program it is associated with, it opens the "properties" box. The only way I have found to correct it is to re-boot. This problem happens randomly. It is in general...a pain in the butt! Does anyone know what causes this and how it can be corrected? Is it a glitch in the 98 operating system? - Rocco

Right-click an open space on your desktop; Click Refresh or, if that doesn't work re-create the shortcut.

Must be self -inflicted somehow. Can't say as I've ever
    had the problem.

    I use the single-click method so I don't have to right-click
    anything.

Is it any Icon or always just certain ones? What method are you
using to send Icon's to the desktop?

    Cheers.

Have you tried deleting the Shell Icon Folder? If not try it and see if it makes a difference, there could be a corruption there. Do as follows.

Open Windows Explorer/view\and selct view all file and folders.

Then search down right hand window pane and find the icon folder and delete it. Restart computer and the folder will be re-built.
