Macromedia Flash and Internet Explorer 5.5

I can not view any page in IE which needs flash or shockwave. I've tried to go to Macromedia website and tried auto install but IE freezes everytime and I've to use "ctrl+alt+del" to kill it. Same happens with website.
In their website http://www.flash.com under support and troubleshooting section, thay have mentioned that Active X is causing this problem and they suggest to download and install another program and then try to install flash player. I've tried that and installed those programs but as soon as I try to install flash or shockwave, the IE window freezes.
Anyone have experience with same problem ? If so what is the solution ?

Check in IE Tools/Internet Options/Advanced to make sure you have the allow downloads (s/thing similar) enabled. Also, off-hand you could go to the microsoft download center and use their product upgrade option to download the latest Shockwave and Flash updates/Utilities.

I think it might be possible as well to temp disable the active X in the internet options as well, but I'm not sure of what (if any) adverse effect this would have on your download capabilities.

All the download options are enable, still same problem.

I've tried disabling Active X options, I was able to go to the websites with flash like I was trying to go to
Intel website and then to support to download some files. I got a warning that I'm not able to see any graphics but I was able to surf that website.
After that I enabled ActiveX options in IE and try to go back to the same site and had problem again.

Today I'll try Microsoft website, if not I'll try to install IE again.

Have you checked add/remove programs to see if any Macromedia fles show up there, also check each folder on you hard drive to see if they show up anywhere else? Some software installs Flash or Shockwave in order to run,you may have a "bad" or partial install in another directory and it may be causing the update to hang because the files it is trying to update are actually being used but not from where it expects to find them. You should probably then uninstall the other occurances of it you find, and then try to install it again.
