Question Internet Explorer problem with Macromedia Flash

I've this problem with IE for a while. When I go to a site which requires Macromedia Flash e.g http://support.intel.com/sites/suppo...lhome+support&
I get this pop up window "Do you want to install and run Flash 5.0" blah blah ................If I say yes IE hangs and I've to use 3 finger trick "ctrl+alt+del". But if I say no everything works fine.
I've seen in Macromedia website that if you have problem installing Flash and Shochwave in IE,install this patch first and then install Flash. But did not work either. I was using IE 5.5 SP1 and now I'm using IE 6.0 and I see the same problem with both.
Someone told me the problem could be Active-X related. The security level in IE is default and "Install on demand" feature is enabled.
    My OS is Windows ME.

Any idea why and how can I fix it ?

Not really...I am still driving IE 5, but can give you a couple of places you may not have looked yet.
Home page for ME (with links off to troubleshooting and such) http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsMe/

And there are a number of database entries after typing "Internet Explorer 6" in box in http://search.microsoft.com/us/SearchMS25.asp On this page, go down to bottom and "Clear", then put check mark in the Knowledge base (in the right column), then "Internet Explorer 6" in box and hit the Search. List of problems and other links.

I had a similar problem with Flash, I "solved" it by turning off "auto-update" and going dirctly to Macromedia and downlosding the then current Flash package and installing it, not the update but the whole package...after that I haven't had any problems with it.

    Thanks "kayofcircles", thanks "mjc".

I've found some interesting info regarding ME and IE. Here is the link if you are interested and I welcome any suggestion. http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q260/6/61.ASP

After installation of ME, I've upgraded my browser and I've chosen to upgrade minimal or customize my browser. Looks like thats what caused the problem and now I'm stuck with the flash problem. I went back to IE 5.5 and then tried upgrade to IE 6.0 and this time I choose "install all component" and after installation tried to go to the same web site which requires flash 5.0, but did not work.

I've tried "mjc'c" suggestion, my auto update is already turned off, did not work either.

I guess I've to reinstall ME on top my ME again to solve the problem. Not sure if thats even gonna work.

What do you guys think ?

rkmca: Just went to the link you posted and I don't even understand it. As TJay says, it's "clear as mud". I do get those Flash pop ups from time to time, but have never clicked yes.

Posting mostly cuz will get it on Today's and maybe one of the experts will know the answer to your reinstalling question.

If I understand that MS link correctly, you may be right. It looks like after installing IE 5.5 from an outside source, ie download, you can no longer install Macromedia...and to get it back the options do look rather limited. I would say hold off on the reinstall for a bit and see if anyone else can turn up something less extreme...

What I don't understand is why after installing IE 6 you still have the same problem...unless it can somehow carry over? Gotta be something the registry.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Pete, I don't understand it either, why IE 6.0 is also giving error. Well I went back to IE 5.5 and same problem.
I did not try system restore as I disabled it and I doubt that would have helped either.

Here is the interesting part, I made backup for my files and other stuff I need, then I reformatted the drive, reinstalled ME from scratch and this time I've installed without customizing, guess what, I get the same error. As "kayofcircles" mentioned, I'll just click "no" whenever I'll get that flash window.

But you know, curious mind asks, why and how to fix it. I'll search to find any solution, maybe call up Microsoft. I'll keep you all posted.

Guess we may never know now, but system restore might have worked...that's the kind of thing it was designed for, it's supposed to restore the OS to new install condition. That should include the original IE setup...

Pete and sea69, don't you guyd think that I've formatted the HDD and reinstalled windows again, that should have solved the problem.
Unless there is something wrong with IE5.5 SP1, because after new ME installation I've upgraded the IE to 5.5 SP1 but I did a full installation and there should not be any problem with flash.
