Question 4 in 1 driver problem

I have just installed XP pro and after trying to install the Abit 4in1 drivers for my KT7ARAID mobo everything keeps crashing?
when i try to uninstall them i found they hadn't even been installed...it seems XP just went through the motions of installing them?, anyway the only thing it did install was the DMAtool which doesn't work properly and i get error messages about scsi key? and the like (i don't have any scsi devices)..I went to the Abit website to get updated drivers but this did not help i still got exactly the same errors....what have i done wrong? HELP PLEASE!!!!

One question: Are you using a nVidia-based video card?

If the answer to that is "yes", then you definitely have a problem. The most recent versions of VIA's 4-in-1 drivers and of nVidia's drivers have compatibility problems that can cause all sorts of trouble, especially on Win9x systems - as I myself found out in the past couple of weeks.

There is a great deal of discussion of the issue on the link given, and a great deal of good advice given. Basically, what you need to do is to uninstall your VIA and nVidia drivers completely, then go to Safe Mode and reinstall your 4-in-1's, reboot and install your graphics drivers, then reinstall your AGP drivers separately (_that_ is one of the big sources of trouble, as nVidia's drivers have a tendency to muck up the VIA AGP drivers.)

You might consider trying the 28.32 DET drivers. I hear they are pretty good.

Right you are, and I forgot to mention that. Incidentially, if you're running PowerDVD version 4 (XP) to play your DVD's and you have a nVidia card, you should use the Detonators 28.32 and get the patch from Cyberlink's site. For being the industry leader in graphics, nVidia's drivers do seem to cause an ungodly lot of problems...

If your system continues to run OK after a few days, then everything would seem to be all right, but keep monitoring it. No two computers are ever built exactly alike.

One other point I forgot to mention - but actually, I figured it out just last night. VIA offers you a choice of two standalone AGP driver packages to download, 4.05 and 4.20. If you're using Win9X, especially Win98SE, do _not_ use 4.20 (which is the version included in the latest 4-in-1 packages that give Win9x users so much trouble); use version 4.05, which is the version included in the version 4.35 4-in-1 package recommended for Win9x users. Remember, install 4-in-1's first (in Safe Mode if possible - if you're installing direct from CD, I don't think Win9x accesses CD-ROM drives in Safe Mode), then graphics drivers, then AGP drivers.

    do _not_ use
A quick note here since I've seen the above several times. The new vBulletin software the forums use has an underline feature coded in. Format it like this:

    [ u]underline[/u

with another bracket ] behind the second u and no space after the first bracket. I did that to make the actual code show up, otherwise, it would underline it again.

Or look at the top of the edit window and use the Underline button.

    Might be a similar problem?

Incidentally i took a look at this post and began wondering if this could be a similar problem i have. I've posted a message under Multimedia (new Geforce2 - audio problem) and my motherboard also has a Via Chipset (Apollo MVP3). I've installed the 4in1 with this name: 4in1438(2)v(a).exe and have WinME running.
Please take a look at my previous topic and if this could have something to do and you can help me i'll be grateful

So there is, but you're talking to an old-time Usenetter here - well, these days, 1994 IS "old-time"! I started using the Net back before Netscape had even gone to beta, and at that time text-mode was it. (See? I remembered to use the proper button this time! ) Thus, if you wanted to underline, you had to do _this_.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...

Yep, I think you've got the same species of problem, if not quite precisely the exact same one. Since WinME is essentially an update of Win9x, I think the solution is the same: get version 4.35 of the 4-in-1 drivers, uninstall version 4.38, uninstall your nVidia drivers, run Detonator Destroyer (a neat little third-party utility) to make sure all the nVidia files are removed, then go to Safe Mode, install 4-in-1 version 4.35, reboot, reinstall the nVidia drivers, and install the AGP driver (you can download this as a separate package from VIA's site; use the version 4.05 drivers, which are the same as the ones included in version 4.35 of the 4-in-1 package).

I've been scanning for similar problems to one I have posted in Multimedia and although my sympsoms are different - my failures only occur when trying to play a cd-rom game - the drivers dialogue on this thread has piqued my curiosity.

I have a K7VTA3 v.2 mobo and installed an XFX Ti4200 card running Win98SE. I have installed the 4.40 4 in 1 drivers and then the latest graphics drivers. My problem persists.

I'm thinking from reading joea64's comments I should now remove the 4.40 update in favor of the 4.35, install the graphics drivers, then install the AGP405.

What is the best way to un-install the 4 in 1 drivers??

Unpack the zip file to a floppy. Boot up in safe mode to do the install use the uninstall feature that comes with the drivers to dump the 4.40 drivers.

When you unzip the files to a floppy, you may need to delete the folders for the OS'es you're _not_ running, because the whole thing won't fit on one floppy (as I found out). I use Win98SE, so I didn't extract the Win2k or XP folders.
