Thread: Windows 98

    Windows 98

I'm getting another computer with Windows XP factory installed. I'm concerned about what I'm seeing and hearing about XP and would like to keep on using 98. Can I uninstall XP and install 98 on this new computer. If so, what is the best way to do this. I'm no computer whiz and any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

You should be able to setup a dual boot with both XP and 98 and start up whichever one you like each time.

Sounds great. How do I go about doing this? My old computer had a rstore CD which they say is only for that computer. I also have a Windows SE update. Could I use that? Thanks for your response.

The SE update MAY work but you will have to install it prior to WXP for it to work with separate partitions.

You can tell right now if you can use the update CD. Just try to install it on whatever you have right now. Only go as far as it takes to tell. Then cancel out of setup.

My 98SE disk is 622 megabytes, so you can tell that way too.

The restore disk can sometimes be overridden but not always. Some yes others no. But you can still use it to install other softwares it has on it just not the OS.

When you are talking about off the shelf systems every thing is a big maybe, this new XP machine...is it an off the shelf system too?

If so it is likely you will not even get a restore disk this time, but there will be a special partition on the hard drive that contains the installation files. If you remove or damage that partition you will never be able to restore your machine to factory specs (not really never but with great difficulty). This partition will iinclude the OS and any bundled software. Some manufacturers will give you the instructions on how to make a restore disk, but some don't.

    DON'T go back to 98.

If it's factory installed, XP will probably work just fine. It is a lot more stable than 98.

You gan go the dual boot road if you wan't, but I still don't know why
