    Exclamation CD Rom error 31

My cd rom was working fine until I installed, and then uninstalled the software for a cd writer. After uninstalling the cd wr, my cd rom disappeared from "my computer". In device manager I can locate the cd rom but it comes up with driver error 31. I followed the troubleshooting guide, but there is no "resources" tab under the cd rom's properties with which to follow the guide's instructions. I have tried uninstalling the cd rom and reinstalling it, but it still comes up with the same error. In the device manager I can't find any other hardware that may be conflicting with the cd rom. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it makes any difference, I am using Windows 2000 professional.

    Welcome, psiwolf!

See if this is the right 'Error 31'.

    Troubleshoot device drivers here.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck!

    Thumbs up

I had the same problem, On installing the CDROM writer (HP 9040)where the old drive was, the install program asked for the CD to be inserted, and from then on wouldn't recognise the CDROM at all . As you say it saw it in Disk Manger, but error 31 said that it was probably a device manager problem. Nothing showed as wrong on the IDE Controllers.
As we were unable to go backwards either because it wouldn't use the old CDROM either, It all got hard. We called in a paid "expert" whose 1 hr effort concluded with reload the OS . We have yet to go down that path as several programs are obviously in need of reinstalling.
HP help were not, and as windows 2000 uses generic drivers for the CDROMs then there were no updates to reload either.

    Cool

Thanks for the troubleshoot info tjay. It didn't solve the problem but was a good guide anyway. Mushie (cheers to another Kiwi), I was afraid I'd have to reinstall the whole OS (just what I didn't want to do - same reason as you), but at least you've saved me some money on getting in one of those "experts" you were talking about.

    I appreciate the help!
