    system tray icons hideable?

    hi folks!

could someone tell me if there is any way to hide system tray icons without disabling the program? that is... if i use a program say xyz and i want it to start automatically with windows and yet not show it's icon in the system tray..... is it possible?

Is there any registry value i could edit to achieve the above? Also can i prevent the program from being listed in the add/remove program cosole?

any info about either win 98 or win xp would be much appreciated.

    thanks!!

Most programs that show in the system tray will have a configuration panel with a check box somewhere in the options to enable/disable it showing there when it runs.

There is a list somewhere in the registry or an *.ini file that shows/hides items in the Add/Remove Panel. Usually it is tweaked to show programs that are installed but not usually shown there. So presumably one would need to modify that list. If I can find it I will post back, but a bit of searching for Add/Remove plus a few keywords might come up trumps.

In Windows XP, just right-click the taskbar, select properties and check the box next to "Hide inactive icons"

This may not hide all the ones you want it to though, since Windows will decide what is an inactive icon...
When all else fails, read the instructions.

    Hey guys.

I tried that with win xp but problem is that it will still show the icon if the expand arrow is clicked. I want it to be totally foolproof so only i know the program is running and no one else.

Also, it does not have any option to disable the tray icon.

    Thanks for the help though.

as previousely explaned.....To manage this area, simply right click the Taskbar, and choose Properties. In the Properties window that appears, on the Taskbar tab, check the box next to "Hide Inactive Icons" if it isn't already checked, and then click the "Customize..." button. That will bring up a window that allows you to choose one of three behaviors for each program icon that appears in the system tray: "Hide when inactive," "Always hide," or "always show."

The Add/Remove Folder can be hidden in the Control Panel, or individual items can be hidden in the Add/Remove console by using TweakUI.

In Win98 it may already be on your HDD or get the PowerToys folder from the reskit on the installation CD. If Tweakui.inf is on your HDD already then RClick on it and choose install. Then open it from the Control Panel.

There is a new version for WinXP; both versions can be downloaded from Microsoft.

In WinXP there is a sysoc.inf folder which contains the hidden/unhidden add-remove items. See:- http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,602049,00.asp for details.

Leaving aside the systray in WinXP. Individual software makers will have written into their programs how they run and how they can be customised. Such things as showing in the System Tray would either be achieved by unchecking the value in its options somewhere or by enablling a specific switch afer the *.exe is run. I don't think this is ever controlled from the Registry - but I'm open to correction on that.

Which specific software do you want to hide from view BTW?
