That's one hell of large txt file and notepad mightnt like it that large. RClick on it and choose open with; then try word pad or word or internet explorer.

PS How much RAM do you have and is windows managing your memory? Also which OS?

Open your word processing program and browse to the file to open from the program.

VEdit claims to edit files up to 2 gigabytes. You might try downloading and running the trial version.

What is this Text file, are you sure it is ok and something that you actually need? Anything that comes in an oversized package that you didn't make yourself would make me suspicious. Make sure you have an updated antivirus running when you do open it....

Then again, I am probably just being paranoid...

If the above replies don't solve your need, let me know. I have an old program from my DOS days (when huge files were more of a problem) that will split ANY text file into as many smaller files needed based on the users specified output file length. So, for example, it could give you 99 files that are each approximately 1 meg or about 50 files that are each about 2 meg, etc.

I haven't run that program for some time but I know it will run under WIN95 and, of course, under DOS.

The files I have downloaded from the IRS have always been PDF files. If that is the case, you need Adobe's reader program.
