Legacy-free

So if they’re going to come out with motherboards that are legacy-free. How would you have a mouse in safe mode, for example? If USB doesn’t work in sate mode what do you use? This would also apply to other software that runs in DOS.

Over the past few years the “Legacy-Free” systems have popped up.
Few that I have seen caught on

The Only people who want to see a total end to Legacy is Micro-soft
It makes more money by selling you the latest and Greatest ? In software

Who needs a floppy disk today ?

It isn't that USB can't work in safe mode, it is just that the the USB drivers aren't loaded in safe mode like the ps/2 port device drivers are. Until MS makes the loading of USB drivers in safe-mode standard "legacy-free" machines make about as much sense as the iLoo.....

I seem to recall a book on the subject of "Megatrends." Essentially, marketing atop of an intended purchase (e.g., if you sell tires, it might be wise to get into the alignment business).

This one seems to be an "upsell" based on the whole concept of downloading!

My system isn't legacy-free but I don't use any legacy devices. My USB keyboard (MS Natural Keyboard Pro) works in safe mode, MS-DOS, and even BIOS setup without any drivers loaded.

It isn't Microsoft that wants to do away with legacy devices it is Intel and all of the other motherboard manufacturers because the less hardware they need to put on the boards the cheaper the manufacturing process and more of the selling price is profit.

The problem with USB in safe mode lies in hardware and BIOS support not in operating system support.

Note: on my system the USB keyboard support is disabled in BIOS setup by default and has to be enabled using a PS2 keyboard so I have to keep one handy if I need to reset the BIOS to default.

Without USB keyboard support enabled in BIOS it still works in safe-mode but not MS-DOS or BIOS setup and it doesn't work for the boot menu on a multi-boot system.

My USB mouse doesn't work in MS-DOS but I can switch it to a PS2 port with an adapter if I need to.

classic....actually it wasn't a hoax, the one link explains that MS retracted the hoax story, saying it really was an internal marketing department idea that was in the "developmental" stage and not really meant for public release....

rond...USB in safe mode is purely on OS thing, because safe mode is purely an OS thing. Safe mode is an MS invention, a wayy of proving that it is really third party apps screwing up the works, because if Windows runs in safe mode then the problem can't be with Windows...

This is acheived by loading only minimal drivers, the bare basics to be able to actually be able to use Windows.
