Thread: PC Freezing during software installation

  1. #1

Question PC Freezing during software installation

I tried to format my hard disk. Everything went smooth until I successfully setup operating system (Windows 98se). Problem come out when I want to install other application software (Microsoft Office 2000, Norton Antivirus 2002 etc...). My PC hangs up during the installation process. Hard disk seem like not running but the light indicator is on. I have tried to re-setup windows and scan my hard disk for any error or bad sector. But the situation still remain the same.
What might happenned to my desktop?
Your help is needed. Thanks in advance!

    Hello ^Thunder,

    Welcome to Forums!

First thing I would do is run the Harddrive manufacturer's diagnostics...these can be obtained from the manufactuer's website...

If you had a successful installation of the Operating System it appears that you are working with an existing Harddrive that was already partitioned...is this indeed the case?

Thunder.. Your symptoms sound like a perfect example of bad sectors on the HDD.

I agree with Whyzman .. use the manufacturers diags as they are more thorough than scandisk.

    Question

Thanks to Whyzman and Inka! I have done the manufacturer's diagnostics. Results show that my hard drive functioning properly. But, I still facing the same problem - freezing during software installation.
    What else I can do?

You might need to run a RAM tester next to see if you might have a RAM problem since that can also cause unpredictable freezes. The power supply is another possibility, but harder to check. You can find a RAM tester called DocMem here.

Would you tell us a bit about your computer's history? Is this a new Harddrive?

Also, when you are attempting to install you might want to CTRL+ALT+DEL and shut down all tasks except for Systray and Explorer...

& also, as its a new install of win98 check that all the devices are properly installed. Do that in the control panel, system. Whilst you are there check also that you are not running in 'dos compatability mode' as that can make it quite scarey..
Will be one of the tabs in control panel >system where it will either tell you the pc is configured for maximum performance (or something similar) or else you have a problem.

Thanks to Budfred, Whyzman & Inka. I've tried all the suggestions (RAM testing, shut down unrelated tasks, etc...). Unfortunately, the problem still there. Anyhow, there should be a good news cause I found something in control panel > system > system device. There is an error under "Advanced Power Management support".
    Device Status
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)
Try upgrading the device drivers for the device.

Is it means that my power supply got problem?

Further information on my PC :
    Pentium 166MMX processor (Remain)
    4GB HDD (Remain)
    32MB SDRAM (Remain)
BENQ 52X CD-ROM (Newly changed, previously is Cyberdrive 24X)
    S3 Trio Graphic Card (Remain)
    Yamaha Sound Card (Remain)

During installation, all the above been detected (Plug & Play) by Windows 98se. I'm not sure whether there is a motherboard's driver due to the PC quite old already.

I would have a look at Device Manager in SAFEMODE and see if there's anything else there that might be of interest.

I would start by removing any duplicate entries of devices should you find them...this means removing both duplicate or triplicate entries...don't leave any behind and then reboot allowing Windoze to locate and install the drivers...

    Check under all device categories...

There is no duplicate entry inside there. I checked thoroughly. I suspect the problem came from "Advanced Power Management support". I tried to remove it and let windows to locate and reinstall the driver. Just after windows reinstall the driver. My PC hang up. I tried to CTRL+ALT+DEL. I found that there are 2 new tasks running but both in (not responding). They are "rundll32" & "mmtask". Does it means that I need to replace my power supply? Anything concern to my motherboard?

With all the nasties out there I would suggest that you do an online AV scan...if you check mjc's link you will find them listed...

Hello! Buddy! My problem solved! Finally I know what happened to my PC. Just wanna share with you guys... It's because of that new CR-ROM drive... It's able to browse a CD or even successfully install the Windows OS... just unable to install application software... Problem solved after I replaced another CD-ROM drive...

    Thanks!

Thanks for letting us know what the solution was...

I've never heard of such a problem with a CD-ROM before...

It would be great if someone has some insight into the "inner workings" of the problem...

Since you know you have read errors on your old Cd-Rom, I would be also be suspicious of your Windows installation. Read errors may have corrupted Windows. The errors may not be evident right now, but could show up in the future.

I would start over with a fresh installation of Windows.
