Cannot install Media Player

I put a new HDD on my computer,I re-downloaded all the apps (like Antivirus,Real player and so on)but after downloading Media Player and before the setup page I've got a message that says "Windows update is unable to find availables updates for this aplication,try again later"
I also tried to go to the Windows Update page,but another message appears that says"Windows Update is currently unavailable,try again later".I have been trying for about 10 days with the same error.
Can anybody please tell me if the Windows Update page is really out of service or it is something in my machine that prevent me from accessing it.
I'm running 98se.512 ram,40 gb HDD.
Sorry,I forgot:the same happens with WMP9 and WMP7.
