    Potential problem

Based on some feedback I've received regarding the current multi booting system I have(Windows 98 and XP), it appears likely that if I change the current motherboard I have to a different one, I won't be able to boot into XP. In fact, I've seen this already occur when I moved a hard drive from one PC to another, with both PC's having MSI mobo's but different models. Right away I discovered I couldn't boot into the XP partition. So when I subsequently put the hard drive back into the PC where I originally created the multi boot setup, I wound up having to do a complete reinstall of XP. The Recovery Console commands(i.e., fixboot, fixmbr)didn't seem to help.

So I'm wondering if there's some way around this if I decide to change mobo's which I was planning on sometime soon. I know about the XP floppy disk boot ups that can be created but is that enough?

    Thanks,

Generally Windoze gets indigestion when you swap out motherboards, it has configured itself for the motherboard you have now and gets confused when you put in a new one. This is also likely to be true with Win98.

You could run a Repair Install for WinXP, but if you have trouble with Win98, you may just have to reinstall....

Go HERE for more info about a Repair Install.

Yeah, I'm prepared for that so my contingency preparation consists of already having creating the Norton ghosted image CD's for 98 and will soon use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard feature that comes with XP.

This is all an educational venture for me, mind you, being the avid Neo-geek enthusiast I am!

You may have to do Product Activation on XP too, due to the change in installation environment, ie boards, RAM, etc. It shouldn't mean more than a phone call...just a "MS can I do this?" thing.
WIN 98 goes on first, then XP on normal installs, some here know Ghost better than I do.
