Thread: Boot Problem?

  1. #1

    Question Boot Problem?

I have just built my first Computer I have a CPU AMD 64 |3400+ ATHLON 64 on a MB GIGABYTE GA-K8NS Ultra-939 with 1GB DDRAM |DDR400 PC3200. I also have a new SATA 120 GB Hard Drive from Maxtor. I am using my old computers DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW Drives, The floppy disk drive and the old video card.

Theres what I am working with. Now the question is. I have installed everything in to the case and have checked and rechecked all of my connections several times and the all checked out okay. When I start up my computer it starts runs though the first several steps (like reconizing the hard drive and the cd drives and the RAM) Then it shuts off. I try to turn it on again and it quickly shuts off again. Then if I let it sit for about a hour and come back it will repeat the above process.

For some reason I think that it is overheating am I right? If not what is going on?

Did you apply thermal compound to the CPU and the heatsink, or was there a thermal pad on the bottom of the heatsink?

If there was a thermal pad on the heatsink, then did you remove a protective plastic cover on the pad?

Is the heatsink securely and correctly clamped to the CPU die, with no air gaps between the heatsink and the CPU die?

    Does the CPU fan run?

Is the CPU fan connected to the correct fan terminal on the MB?

If the CPU fan terminal on the MB has 3 pins, then does the CPU fan connector also have 3 slots?

Did you clear CMOS with a MB jumper?

    Hey, don't feel bad.
I've also been there and done that more times than I'd like to admit.

Glad to hear that you got it working, and thanks for posting back with the fix.
