    amoeba,

    Hello and welcome to PCGuide...

In future please do not jump into someone else's thread... It is confusing and can make it harder for you and the other person to get the help you need... Start your own thread... I split your post off for that reason...

You are infected with the Blaster worm... Please download this tool and run it:

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

Please turn off any protection software from Spybot or MS AntiSpyware so that the things we fix are not simply restored...

Please run an HJT scan and check these if they are still there:

    O2 - BHO: ZServObj Class - {00000000-C1EC-0345-6EC2-4D0300000000} - C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windows auto update] msblast.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tpftwotsqbv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\yvssjdn.exe

Then close all open windows except HJT and click Fix Checked...

Reboot to Safe Mode (tap F8 before WinXP starts to load and choose Safe Mode).... Find and remove these if they are still there:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yvssjdn.exe
    msblast.exe

You will need to do a search for the second one... You may need to set WinXP to show all hidden and system files to find them... If you can't find the first one, open HJT (still in Safe Mode) and go to Misc Tools and use the "delete on reboot" option to enter the whole location and file... Then reboot and post a new log... Also report on how things went and how your system is running...

So how did I get infected in the first place??

    Hi,

    Thanks for your quick reply...

I used the Blaster tool but to no avail, it could not find an infection. I don't know how I could possibly have got MsBlast because my virus checker, software firewall, hardware firewall and Windows are completely up to date. I haven't really noticed any problem with performance either. Anyway...I did everything else you said and while looking through C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32 also deleted some other dodgy looking dll files and about four folders that had ZServ and Farmext RAR archives in. I have just re-run HJT and Microsoft Spyware and it looks as if I'm free of the problems (fingers crossed). The results are below...

Your help is much appreciated! Thanks

This is Blaster, but apparently you were able to delete it, so it hopefully won't be a problem anymore...

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windows auto update] msblast.exe

Your log seems to be clean now.... Good work...

Here is my prevention speech to try to keep it clean:

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....
