The easiest thing to do is swap out the monitor with a known good one. This will tell you if it's the monitor itself or the system that has the problem. If the good monitor doesn't work either, then swapping out the video would be the next step. If the good monitor doesn't work with the good video card, then somethings up with the motherboard or the power supply. All component changes should be done with the system powered down.

Granted, if you don't have "spare parts" laying around, or a friend who would provide them, about all you can do is take it to a shop.

Yes, the only and infact proper way in this sorta situation is trying with another working monitor. If this new working monitor works Ok with the system, then your original monitor maybe damaged. If it gives the same charecterstic, its probably your video card, since you can hear xps startup sound, other componenets should be OK.
OR, you may try this non-working(fo the time being) monitor on another working system.
Plzz do that and post back.

Some mobo's will disable the onboard video when a video card is installed. Have you tried this?

Monitor screen suddenly went black and will not turn on

I have a problem with my monitor. I was on my computer just the other day and everything was operating fine when suddenly my screen just went black and the power light faded and began flashing very faintly. I turned off the computer and restarted it, I even turned off the monitor but when I restarted and powered on the monitor again I get absolutely nothing. No mouse, no welcome screen... nothing... just black. I noticed that when I turn on the monitor the power light never fully lights up. It's just a very faint green light that flickers and you can barely see it for how faint it is. Also I noticed a kind of clicking sound coming from the monitor. Do I need to replace my monitor? It's about 5 years old and it's an HP Pavilion, running on Windows XP. It originally came with Windows ME but I replaced it quite recently, maybe about 5 months ago. Can anyone help? :S Oh and I also don't have another monitor that I can swap with to test :S
