    HalfLife2 and Steam

I downloaded the HalfLife2 demo because I wanted to see what some have called the greatest game ever created. When I clicked the self extrating .exe, it wanted to install something called "Steam"...never heard of it, so I cancelled. What is it? Is the demo worth even looking at? I checked out the FarCry demo and it's BS.

Steam is how the games content is delivered. Even if you go out and buy the game at the store, you still have to download it from Steam. Seems silly I know, but it works. You will also have to create a steam account.

The good thing about Steam is all updates and patches are automatically downloaded and installed, if you so chose. Which is good for gamers because you don't have go searching for updates, it's all right there in Steam. And you can buy the latest games from Steam as soon as they are released. Actually you can preload games before they are in the stores, so they are ready to be played the moment they are officially released.

Steam has it's ups and downs.

    HL2 is worth the effort.

    OK Mr. jlreich,

I'll trust what you say and go for it. My PC is armed to the teeth anyway so any attempted system mods at all are stopped, flagged, and held till I say it's OK.

Just wanted to be reassured, Iguess.

Thanks and I'll let ya know what I think of the demo.

LOL Steam is OK. Oh, and BTW, if you don't want to be on the internet to play, turn off your modem, or temporarily block the internet with your FW if your FW has that option, and click cancel when Steam starts loading. That will start Steam in offline mode.

    Have fun pop pop.

Am I in the minority when I say the loads in HL2 are just terrible? Right in the middle of the action, just when I am really starting to get immersed in the game, everything stops and ... loading ...

I haven't even loaded the demo yet but what I'm seeing here gives me pause. Why would I want to buy a game that needs to load online during play? Especially if I have no desire to do muti-player stuff and I don't want BS interuptions like that. So what if the graphics are great.

I have never really been bothered buy the loading. It loads at predefined points, not just in the middle of playing. With the exception of the boat and buggy sequences, it loads at clearcut spots in the game. And the boat and buggy sequences are very long, so they have to be loaded into memory at some point.

To me it is nothing out of the ordinary. Ram can only hold so much information.

Pop pop, it loads from the HDD, not over the net. You don't have to be online to play. You don't actually play it from Steam, you just get the game files when you first install the game, and any updates from Steam.

    Well...

I suppose I should give it a try before I talk trash. That would be the fair thing to do.
