Power source

I have a motherboard that supports ATX power supply but currently have an AT power supply. Is the energy savings worth changing to ATX if you leave a computer running 24/7? If so can a power supply be purchased seperate from a case? thanx.

Power supplies can be bought separate from the case, that is not a problem. Correct me if I am wrong, but if you have AT power supply, that means you have an AT motherboard... meaning you wouldn't replace one and not the other with ATX stuff. Also, I can't imagine energy savings worthy of purchasing a new powersupply, if so, it would take a long time to accumulate the savings.

Thank you. It is a low end Amtron mother board that was designed to be used either way. I thought the suspend mode might save some $ but I guess it is negligible.

My question would be: why run 24/7 at all? I used to but realized it's not necessary, and costs a lot of juice, as you said.

Ok I guess I have an ATX case and motherboard. but the ability to power down is not enabled as I belive the power supply is AT it has the old moniter plug in and no hookups connected to the suspend post. As IXL stated energy savings and now that my hard drive died and the computer is off- quiet.

FYI some motherboards (during the transition era) can infact use two different power sources. As copied from the Amtron mainboard page -Supports AT and ATX power connectors and ATX power management features such as Suspend Mode, Wake on Alarm, and software Shutdown.

Hello everyone,
I own a HP Pavillion 6630 model. About 2 months ago I upgraded the RAM to 2-128RAM...everything was running smoothly until 3 weeks ago that my machine shut down while I was online. I carefully checked my comp. and noticed that the power supply fan does not always come on, when it does not it overheats and that's when it shuts off. As Im writing this it is running oK. What can I do to fix this problem? How can i check what kind of fan or power supply Im running and what kind do I need if a change is required? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Hope to hear from you soon.-
