Thread: Lost User

    Lost User

Using Windows 2000 Pro-- I inadvertently deleted a "User" named XXX from the listing shown on "Users and Passwords". When I attempted to again add the same user I got a message "XXX is already a user and cannot be added".

When I checked the users shown under Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Users, XXX shows up on the list!!

When I attempted to delete XXX from that list (planning to re-add XXX in Users and Passwords), I was warned, if XXX is deleted any entries associated with XXX will not be available if the same name is subsequently added (or words to that effect). XXX is associated with several data management functions which I would like to recover.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know whether it will fix your particular problem, but it might be worth trying the [Linux based] "NT Password Editor" [item 5 on the 1st menu when you boot from the CD] in the "Emergency Boot CD" [EBCD] below.
I believe it allows you to fix user passwords [and perhaps other user details].

This makes it easier to boot a chosen drive [particularly the one holding the EBCD].

This has a number of useful utilities included including "Image" [for DOS, by Terabyte] & "File Manager".
