    No audio device shown

Hopefully someone can help me. I built a new computer, mb= Asrock P4i65GV with onboard vga and sound. Sound is cmi 9780 chip with C-media AC97 audio device. This shows up and is detected fine in my device manager, I have upgraded the driver and uninstalled and reinstalled it repeatedly. But under control panel sounds and audio devices no audio device is listed. The default device listed is Modem #0 line. I can hear post through system speaker but that is it.

    System specs:
Windows XP Pro Serv pk 2
    Celeron 2.4
jumpered mb for front and back audio
just 2 speakers on audio out
onboard lan works fine (using to connect to broadband modem and network)
no onboard dialup modem (and diabled in bios)
updated bios to latest version 2.1 American Megatrends

Any other info you need just let me know. Thanks.

If the device shows in Device Manager and there are no yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager it is probable that the device is correctly installed - and even more probable if there is a sound icon in the system tray. I generally start troubleshooting sound and music issues in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool; reached by entering directx in the run box.

Also are the speakers attached to the front or rear audio ports; rear is more standard. The front panel jumpers must be correct on the mobo header pins along with the cables to the front panel.

And not forgetting the obvious; is the sound turned right down or muted on any of the relevant parts.
