Dr. Watson postmortem debugger and serious problems

Hello all,
My Toshiba Satellite is a few years old now, and just yesterday I turned my laptop on and noticed it was running very slow. Next thing I know, I get the generic error message from windows telling me that Dr. Watson postmortem debugger has encountered an error etc. etc. I opted to not send an error report. Next thing I know, I have 15 error windows, all for various operations such as Verify Class Id, Soundmax Service Agent, and Windows Command Prompt. They wont stay away either.

I tried to open firefox, it wont work once the error windows appear. I try to run msconfig, the problem gives me an error message that says msconfig has encountered a problem and needs to close. I searched for the acebot virus in my folders to no avail. I ran my comp in safe mode, still got the errors. I'm getting more frustrated by the second.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like corrupt file system and/or failing hard drive.

Backup any important data while you can.

Only then run ...
chkdsk /r
... from the command prompt and allow a restart.

Suggest you also run the Toshiba or the specific HDD maker's diagnostics (if available) or HDTune.
