Pen drive problem

Hello,
Recently I purchased one kingston pendrive of 80GB from unknown person. I verified its capacity at the shop itself on computer. later when i copied some files on pendrive. it start showing the files on the pendrive. However if I remove the pendrive and again connect it with computer, every thing simply disappears. The pendrive remains empty and showing full available capacity. I could not understand the reason.
One of my friend told me that 80GB pen drive is fake.
Any help would be appreciated.

The largest capacity pen drive I have seen is 64GB. Checking a couple of websites confirms they only have up to 64GB drives available.

Also 80GB would be a very odd number. Though there is nothing stopping the manufacturers from making an 80GB drive it doesn't follow the logical pattern that is normally followed.

I did find these that do in fact come in 80GB capacities. But they are not pen drives in the traditional sense in that they are not flash based but have a spinning disk.

All that being said I would experiment, assuming you are not trying to recover important files that were on there, and see if you can put some files on there then move to another machine and see if the files stick. Also insert and remove in the same machine to see what happens. It is possible the drive is faulty.

What OS are you running? If running a Linux OS make sure you unmount the drive before removing it.

If it's a genuine Kingston PenDrive it should be marked DataTraveller and the max capacity at the moment, as stated by jlreich, is 64GB. Or did you mean 8GB maybe?

This seems to be a reoccurring theme on that site. I suppose since I have never had to do it if someone invited me to verify the capacity on their machine I would be suspicious.

My guess is someone got a hold of some small capacity and/or defective chips for really cheap and tweaked the firmware to make them seem bigger.

My thoughts exactly. Take a 50ml container and paint 5 litres on its outside.

I read your comment. First you will be low level formating your USB Hard disk. I think your problem solved out. If not working properly than please checking your hard disk to service center.I think they may be solved out your problem....
